If you are feeling particularly adventuresome, NJ Transit can get you from Mahwah to NYC in just over an hour, giving you the opportunity to come explore around here for a bit. Probably not a good option all of the time, but maybe for one night to break up the monotony.

Yes, Scanning Electron Microscope/Microscopy. And EDS = Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, which is an elemental analysis technique used in electron microscopes. And I will be happy to comment on the training course when I get back, or possibly even while I'm there.
