My ex used to get confrontational with those guys and he's not that much bigger than you (6'1" and a bit stockier). I think you displayed admirable common sense. If manhood requires you to get in fistfights with mouthbreathers who can't get past going out through the in gate, a bit less isn't much of a loss.
Glad I could amuse you. Remembering him nearly getting dragged out of the car because he wouldn't let someone follow him into our complex gate was pretty funny to me, too. Less funny at the time, but distance lends humor.
Don't beat yourself up over it. You were confronted by a belligerent person. You stated your concern plainly but without provoking hostility. You both went your separate ways satisfied. You did just fine.
Do not confuse your inner smart-ass with your manhood. He's a lot closer to your inner child. You should let him out to play as often as possible, but this really wasn't the time.
