Title: Balinor as The Griffin Artist: altocello Rating: G Characters/relationships: Balinor Content notes: For the Celtic Animals Project. Watercolor pencil on black paper.
Thanks reni! \o/ LOL, the sun had just gone behind our hill when I took this photo. In the version just before this one, the sun was lighting up the room wonderfully, and it had a warm glow. Then I noticed there were a bunch of lint flecks on it, and had to take another! By then, the sun had gone, and it was that pale blue from the sky, so that's why it looks cool. I like it, it goes with the blue lighting on that side of his face.
Thanks so much, moi! The highlights were fun to do, I had to work out which bits to leave in shadow from the fire, the blue light, and both light sources. Pleasantly complicated! :D
How utterly awesome! I love the dark aspect of it all, and the blue highlighting - brilliant! And I especially love the Celtic knots of the griffin's wings and tail. Beautifully done! ♥
Thank you very much! As soon as I got Balinor, I knew I needed to do it on black paper. The blue highlighting is the result of a late night inspiration for resolving my lighting dilemma (challenges making for a better work again!). The knots are original, if heavily influenced by my reference materials; I'm so glad you like them! <3
Thank you so much! It was a fun challenge to figure out the highlighting and shadowing from 2 light sources at 2 different angles, and in complementary colors to boot. :D
Thank you! <3 I had a lot of fun doing this one. Once I had done the leg work of figuring out the knots for the griffin it really came together quickly.

I like how the black is now a cool one.
I was so used to seeing it as a warm light, it's like a whole new picture to me!
