I'm in kind of an odd state. I feel very accomplished over the past few weeks, despite the fact that I've had to come up with new mental sub-routines for most of my life. The new job is pretty nifty, but I find myself alternatively bored and overwhelmed by things I need to get done. Currently, I'm dealing with the former - once I get even one of ( Read more... )

Having moved a few times now, I can say, take the essentials to start. Clothes, bedding, things needed for work. Everything else you can move over the course of a few weeks. That is, unless you have large items htta will require a truck, in which case it's easier to rent the truck once and be done with it.

Power, and water are easy. Cable will be a damn pain as unless the house comes with a cable box you'll need to have someone there to let the guy in and such (They give such helpful times as "We'll be there between 8am and noon or between 2pm and six").

Oil, if it's a half tank or more, then the need isn't immediate. If less, get oil in ASAP. You do NOT want to run out of oil or you'll have to call for a repair service. Which is an expensive repair for what amounts to a 5 dollar part.

When I moved, I moved the majority of my stuff at once. I called rent-a-wreck & got a cargo van for something like $70 for a 24-hour rental, including 50 miles, and additional mileage was cheap. It was the best deal I could find - those big yellow rentable boxes tend to be pricey only because it's only an 8-hour slot & you have to use deisel, plus their mileage charge is insane. With the help of six dedicated friends (I had boxed stuff in advance) we loaded up, trucked over & unloaded, returning the van with time to spare. Good luck!

A truck would be handy on my end of the sand bar/taint. I can live with out one tho. Certainly can't afford one. I can probably get a hand from friends with SUVs, but I doubt I can extend that offer. Also, remember that you will be back on Staten Island to do laundry for a while! I may have scored a couch. Please remember to let me know what's going on with the house: move in stuff date, move in people date, pay for utilities date etc. "Gatoraide, Vodka and Prostitute" bill shoudn't be too high for October. November's should be large tho!
