Far Behind, Catching Up

Overall, Vegas was pretty impressive. The people are insufferably rude, but the food and sights make up for them. Oddly, the ones with the most social graces seemed to be the geeks and dorks at the Star Trek Experience. What does that tell you about a city when the Trekkies are the benchmark of politeness? I had such a good time there that some of ( Read more... )

The walking is insane, you have no idea how far apart the hotels are until you start walking. Since I was still recovering from my hip, we rented a car as the hotels all have free valet, it was awesome. Pull right up, get out at the front door and just give a tip when you leave. I didn't realize the hotels all ran free valet, I thought it was charged; but then so much of the city runs on tips, that this makes perfect sense.

Another (cheap) way to go is to take the buses up and down Las Vegas Blvd. (the Strip). They run frequently, and let you off close enough to the front doors of the hotels that you get similar service, without having to rent the car.

That would work as well, but my sister, who was with me, works for Hyatt and got a great discount on the car. When we calculated the other expenses for three of us it was about even. If you drink the bus would be better though.

I would have to agree with durga_kali: You don't know how big the place is until you get there. When you land at the airport, everything looks like it's right across the street: The MGM Grand, the Luxor, several other hotels. And by and large, it is right across the street, but the street is 8-10 lanes wide, and many of the hotels have 5,000+ rooms in them.

If it weren't for the visitors, it'd be a great place.
