And the exodus continues

Yet another person on my friends list said today they are quitting their journal, although they'll still read their friends list - at least for now, at least for as long as us stay. (as us stay? It's been a long day. Go Badgers and Georgia.)

Seriously, this is what happened at the site where tweeti and I met - Bianca's. God knows how both of us ended up ( Read more... )

I think that, in hindsight, we will recognize that LiveJournal was a sort of hybrid technology in between blogs (i.e. Blogger and its ilk) and Facebook, and was probably always doomed to fade away.

Perhaps. I started on here with the intent of blogging; instead, I got a pretty good batch of people listening to me - from the game show group, from journalism, from other places, etc. - that was fun to talk to. Back when I used to do the Friday Column, that drew some people in here. Maybe it's that we've already told all our stories, and what's going on now just isn't that great -at least that's the way I feel about my life. A few years ago, I was chasing presidential candidates, now I'm covering cabbage chucks. I tried a couple of blogs about things I'm passionate about - violence in entertainment - and something I should be an exit about - the Packers. The Packers one died when I realized that writing about the draft was both boring and a waste of time. The other one drew too much flak - I don't mind a good discussion but the trolls drove me out. That seems to happen as the game show board shows - idiots take over. And sadly, it's showing on both sides in politics ( ... )

I started on here in 2001 (I think). In 2001, I was a college freshman.

For those LJ friends who weren't writers, it made sense for them to taper off and move to Facebook. For others, they have other blogs and interests. Personally, I walk the line between not wanting to talk about what's going on in my life and wanting to scream it from the rooftops. I'm working on creating a compromise.

LJ was big for a long time, but the Internet is cyclical. Right now, this form of expression isn't tops anymore for many people.

I'm still here, and I'm still reading, even if I don't post as much. I really should post more to encourage others to post, but this is supposed to be fun.

It is the way of things. I've gone from BBSes to *Prodigy to mailing lists to Usenet to OneList (later absorbed by Yahoo Groups) to LJ to Facebook, completely skipping MySpace. There will be another "new thing" that will come out soon, and people will migrate or stay... And so it goes.

Oh yeah, I left USENET in 2000. From 1993(!!!!) until 2000, that was my preferred location for social interaction. I discovered LJ in 2002, and the rest is history.

To me, Facebook today is like Livejournal was back in its heyday of 2003-2005: a fun, frolicky place with a lot of social interaction. As people start to drift away from LJ, there is less and less interaction and more and more comment-less posts. Think of a house party. You're in the living room, along with 50 other people. Slowly, people start to leave the living room and head into the backyard. As more and more people leave the backyard, you have fewer and fewer people to interact with. Soon, you discover you're all alone, and everyone's outside in the backyard having a great time.

That's why I'm in the backyard.
