A question

For those of you who didn't see me post this elsewhere...

What is the deal with the Hunger Games? It's a huge hit, the books are selling, and all it seems to be to me (from what I've read about it) is that it's a long, depressing, overviolent slog through dystopia, a place where authors spend too damn much time.

What's the appeal?

I actually like dystopian novels and read a lot of them. They're not all violent, though the Hunger Games certainly is.

But I like the Hunger Games books because they are well-written, smart, the main character is a resourceful and intelligent young woman (in stark contrast to, say, the main character of Twilight) and it's an interesting story to me.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course. But I know you're a smart enough guy to respect others'.

Hi there. I LJDQ with you and was wondering what your profession was, so I was trying to LJ-stalk you when I saw this post.

I strongly suggest you take a day and read the first book. It's a quick read, you'll see what the buzz is about, and you'll understand what Stephen King meant when he called it a "jarring speed-rap of a novel that generates nearly constant suspense."
After that, if you like it, you can read the other two and join the fever. And if not, you can use what you learned to create some hilariously accurate memes.
