Stupid internet abbreviations

Apr 26, 2006 10:17

Something's been bugging me recently. I see all these abbreviations on the internet, and some of them I have no clue as to the meaning. I understand most of them, like "lol" means "laugh out loud." Everyone knows that one. But, two that I've seen all over the place are "pwn" and "1337." I think pwn has something to do with online FPS playing ( Read more... )

Okay, so I Wiki'd both of these and now I know. My God, people have too much fucking time on their hands. Why the fuck would you type in Leet just so someone can spend minutes trying to figure out what the fuck it is you typed? Golly fucking Jeez, that makes you so superior to me if I don't immediately know your child speak. Let me break out my Little Orphan Annie secret decoder ring.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...people are fucking stupid.

BOW TO ME!!!

I had heard these terms -- "pwn" and "1337" -- long ago, but I really blame World of Warcraft for the prevalance now.

Pwn, pwned, pwnage are all retarded forms of "own." As in, "I just owned you in that last battle." I suspect the etymology has something to do with the P-key being right next to the O-key on a keyboard. I've heard it pronounced like "Pone," "pawn," and "own."

"1337" is even more dumb, though its heritage may be more respectable. As far as I know, it comes from hacking circles and it means "elite," though most people pronounce it "leet." Again, I blame warcraft for this one's current popularity as well. Like "pwned," it can be used to announce video game proficiency:

"I pwned you with my 1337 skillz"

I typed all this out before I realized you wiki'd all this. Of course, the term wiki'd is also excreted out of the internet's dumb-ass bowels as well, but at least it isn't a code of some sort.

Yeah, that's what I meant my my statement, "Golly fucking Jeez, that makes you so superior to me." That this bullshit comes from the word elite. I don't need to hear that from some fucking seventh grader.

imho drove me crazy for awhile, because i was seeing it everywhere for awhile without knowing it was: in my humble opinion.

I was trying to make it something much more gay. like: ROLLING ON THE FLOOR (with my head in my ass) or, ROTF(wmhima).

The ownage thing comes from cracking also. You own a box when you have root or admin priveleges on it.
