Something's been bugging me recently. I see all these abbreviations on the internet, and some of them I have no clue as to the meaning. I understand most of them, like "lol" means "laugh out loud." Everyone knows that one. But, two that I've seen all over the place are "pwn" and "1337." I think pwn has something to do with online FPS playing

Pwn, pwned, pwnage are all retarded forms of "own." As in, "I just owned you in that last battle." I suspect the etymology has something to do with the P-key being right next to the O-key on a keyboard. I've heard it pronounced like "Pone," "pawn," and "own."
"1337" is even more dumb, though its heritage may be more respectable. As far as I know, it comes from hacking circles and it means "elite," though most people pronounce it "leet." Again, I blame warcraft for this one's current popularity as well. Like "pwned," it can be used to announce video game proficiency:
"I pwned you with my 1337 skillz"
I typed all this out before I realized you wiki'd all this. Of course, the term wiki'd is also excreted out of the internet's dumb-ass bowels as well, but at least it isn't a code of some sort.
