but within 6 weeks the soles were wearing out and detaching...

Did you take them back? Clearly, said shop has an obligation under the Consumer Guarantees Act to replace them.

half of my net weekly income is not a reasonable price to pay for an item of clothing!

My last pair of combat boots cost $40, plus a bit of spirit vinegar. I expect them to last at least two years, longer if I take care of them (though that type tends to have trouble with the rubberised soles - we'll see). They would have cost well over $100 in a shop, if I'd been able to find any (my preferred type is unavailable).

Shopping around on TradeMe can be worth it.

I'm gonna come on here and put in a pitch for Trade Me too. It's recycling and you can get good deals. There are heaps of people selling last season's boots as well as pairs that just don't fit.

Thanks guys... what worries me about buying boots on trade me is that I have very wide feet and calves... I have enough trub getting comfy shoes when I do try them. Buying things without trying them on might be a false economy?

You need to know US vs European size codes, know your size in each, and ask if uncertain. Lots of people also give straight out measurements of the footwear they're selling, which is handy.
