Mother of the Groom

Dear Aunty Lottie,

I know you were sorry you couldn't make it to Jack and Kelly's wedding, but as it turned out it was probably just as well... The service went fine and they both looked beautiful... Kelly was stunning in her red dress... you know I wasn't sure about the red, but it really is her colour, and you should've seen my handsome little boy... Of course Charlotte and Adam looked lovely too. Charlotte looks gorgeous in purple and her hair was so pretty! You should be proud of your namesake... she is kind and sweet and an amazing teacher. I just wish she and Adam would have some babies of their own and give me some grandchildren. You know how it is!

Jack gave such a lovely speech, thanked me and his father for raising him right, and Kara the bridesmaid said lovely things about Kelly, though I was terrified she'd break down and weep right there. So sad, poor girl... she's got a terrible crush on a friend of hers, and he, with eyes only for the bride. She's very beautiful and strong and heroic, our Kelly, but a bit of a heartbreaker. Let's hope she sticks by Jack and him with her, I guess. There've been rumours in the local gutter press about him... I don't believe it of course... but then, after what I found out about his dad... Oh, Aunt Lottie, how can I ever trust anyone again? How can I trust my own judgement?

The evening was a disaster for me! Harry, my good kind HONEST Harry has been indicted for tax evasion! And he confirms it... Confessed and apologised to Jack and to me and Charlotte for letting us down. But honestly, you think you know someone, really, with all my experiences working with criminals... super-villains even, I didn't think there was anyone alive could pull the wool over my eyes, but it seems that love really is blind. And stupid!

I did a terrible thing when he told us "I wouldn't have married you if I'd known you were a crook", I said shakily and stood up and walked away... again, all these years I've spent, so careful of every word, conscious of the effect I could have on a vulnerable mind... and then, when it really matters, I blurt out something like that... and all the more hurtful, because, as I'm sure he knows, it's true. Still, I hope he can forgive me, since I must, I think, forgive him... all those years and our children... I still love him! Though I suspect it will be a long time before I trust him again!

But enough self pity... that happened at the end of the evening and a whole lot had gone on before that, and as I was saying before I started thinking about Harry again, I'd have been worrying about you for the whole evening if you'd been there. There was so much going on. Manifestations of wolf spirits, Sir Galahad and even ancient gods... and apparently the world nearly ended! And our Jack and Kelly, and one of my clients apparently helped save it. Quite an event!

So before the kids arrived I spent a bit of time chatting to some of the other guests... one of my clients, a painfully boring actuary who works with Jack, had been having strange dreams, possibly past life regression, and felt sure that all would be revealed at the reception... a bit of a concern  As the evening progressed, I grew concerned that he was delusional and losing his grip on the present. He appeared to be enthralled by a magician, a dubious character or so I thought, and became quite convinced he was the reincarnation of Sir Galahad. When he got hold of a sword that was nearly as tall as he was, I was seriously considering sedation. How wrong I was! The dubious magician was Merlin, my client really was Galahad, and at the end of the evening he used the sword to banish Loki who was possessing the building manager.

Oh yes, so Loki was there... a god! And Pan Puck, too would you believe? Loki released the wolf spirit that possesed another of my clients... Fenris, I think I told you about him once. When Fenris was no longer controlled by his host he went rampaging off destroying buildings again... Somehow they summoned him back and destroyed him... something to do with a fallen angel and Merlin... and my client with the enormous sword. I didn't quite catch that bit. They also killed Pan Puck who had possessed the photographer and swapped some poor boy with another of my clients, a very distinguished gorilla... both of them were somewhat distressed, and I should have helped more, but I was distracted by some letters sent by someone... the gutter press perhaps... claiming that Coyote was possessing Jack or Kelly or various other things. Had us all running round chasing our tails, and looking sideways at each other... We even got Jack checked for possession, then realised that of course he was possessed, what with being Thunderbird and all! And presumably Coyote would have a bit of a fight if he wanted to get into bed with those two! Funny that... the one god we half expected, Coyote didn't put in an appearance at the wedding or the reception, though everyone was on the look out for him. \Just as well! Two gods of discord was quite enough!
Oh, and I just remembered... Thomas may have finally relaxed his vendetta against superheroes. So early in the evening he was talking about Leigh as usual... you do remember Leigh? Thomas's little girl who played with Jack and Charlotte when they were small. I told you about the dreadful accident when Fenris knocked down the building, and she died. Well she was at the wedding. She came back! Not from the dead... she didn't die, she just ran away. So father and daughter were reunited... isn't that wonderful!

So Aunty Lottie, that's it from me for now. It was all pretty overwhelming, and I'm sure I've forgotten some stuff... oh yes, you'll want to know the cake was delicious! And the flowers and table settings! And the waiting staff were so very helpful! Oh, and the suit you helped me choose. You were right, I should've got the bigger size. With all that was happening, I never did lose that 10 lb, and the jacket was still a bit too tight!

Your loving niece,
Lissa

P.S. Accounts of the wedding from the waitress with the awesome hair and Jack and Kara and Justin/Coyote (okay, so I lied, but Melissa didn't know) and  Harry  (assuming you are his friend) and the other  fabulous pics taken by Robyn/Pan here

P.P.S. A huge thank you to Paul and Jenni and all the people I interacted with, especially my 'family' and everyone who was there on Saturday. It was incredible. Wellington LARPers rock!
