lunenightingale [Character name] Dr. Maria Collins-Carbonell
[Age] 24
[Canon] Captain America: The First Avenger/Marvel Universe
[Point in time taken from canon] During World War II when she works for Howard Stark and the SSR to further research and development for the Allied forces.
[Background]
Official:
Maria Stark Maria grew up in a world where women were held back and not allowed to even attend college in most cases. Because she loved math and science so much, she pushed ahead to learn all she could from libraries and any class she could get into.
Gaining the interest of the science community had been a surprise to her and her mother in the end. And when someone as adventurous and unbound by social norms as Howard Stark comes along, more doors tend to be opened. Which is why she made it into the SSR as a Bio-Chemist that dabbles in Bio-Engineering for her research and development areas.
Now she works hard to continue to prove her worth and plans to make a name for herself by any means she can.
[Personality]
She is a lady. Maria was raised with all the propriety and expectations of a lady from the 1940s. The way she carries herself and addresses others is straight from the school of etiquette that girls were required to take in her childhood. Being sent to an all girls Catholic School she does practice a slight faith and discipline brought on by the nuns always on her for being too eager to try new things. She’s stubborn to a fault and willing to put faith in her abilities and others when things should be impossible. Her curiosity is high and it often times gets her into a lot of trouble. She would be the first to start a fire in the name of scientific research (and still not learn from her mistake) only to try again until it succeeded.
Women in the 1940s were not allowed to be in positions of power and often kept out of the work place. The glass ceiling of today was nothing compared to the level of ‘girls in the kitchen’ view of then. It’s for this reason that she exercises the politeness and behaviors of a lady to counter balance the confidence and zeal for learning science. It’s a result of her obstacles that she is willing to not sleep at night and double check all of her work. It’s almost a level of obsession to get it right. The margin for error is small for a woman trying to be a doctor. In the end, she prefers work to socializing and tends to forget that she should get out once in a while.
She’s also not one to look at anyone with immediate interest in dating, mostly because she is a woman making it in a man’s world. It’s a personal desire to earn her triumphs even if it takes years longer to get there. She refuses to let anyone think she’d sleep her way to the top. It goes against her faith and upbringing to even consider such a thing.
On the other hand, she’s a loyal friend, fun, and tends to like causing a little trouble or playing jokes. Small ones. No need to get anyone hurt or upset. She’s a mother at heart because she loves the science of life. And watching a world plagued by The Depression, she’s seen the worst and made it out alive less her brother due to illness. Losing her brother was the reason she picked biological sciences and she works at it with intensity hoping not to lose anyone else. But a good doctor knows that mental health affects physical health so she tries her best to keep upbeat.
Maria also proves hard to shock. But after working in the science division of World War II, she’s seen horrible things and injuries that normal people have not. Being in the biological sciences, she’s often been the medic for the troops when the medics weren’t enough. And when you’ve worked on a group like the Howling Commandos, you learn fast that there is no impossibility to getting hurt. Being desensitized to this doesn’t make her care less, however, it only makes her more prepared to do more.
[Abilities]
She is an advanced Bio-Chemist and building up her repertoire in Bio-Engineering. Her genius is mostly limited to her field, but she’s strong in problem solving and good at being a medic or general practitioner where necessary.
[Other important stuff]
Canon she marries Howard Stark and is the mother of Tony Stark. I don’t place her canon at this point though for the sake of other characters and for fun.

[First Person]
What were you doing before now?
I was taking classes in the Catholic school while working in a doctor’s clinic as a nurse to help pay the rent. My mother needed the support and I had to give it.” [Simple as that.]
If I offered to save your soul for a price, would you go with it and why?
[There was an open incredulity in her voice and expression when she finally answer that question. ] I’m a devout Catholic. If you are dealing in souls I’d likely think you were the devil’s advocate. No, I wouldn’t trust just anyone to ‘save’ my soul. But… [The raised brow on the man’s face was a silent prompt that made her keep going.] I can’t say I wouldn’t sell my soul to save someone I love. But it’s all circumstantial and not something I’d likely go with for any reason.
Would you consider yourself a hero or a villain? Why? Neither is an option as well, but still tell why.
Hero or villain? [Frowning at the thought, she worked on answering it almost skeptically.] I think everyone dreams of being a hero. But I doubt I’ll ever be either. Heroes should be selfless… out to save the world with no thought of the self. I want to change the world, but under that I want to do it for myself. I want to become a scientist and make marvelous discoveries… maybe I’ll cure cancer or find a way to promote cell regeneration. But in the end, I did it because I wanted to. Because I want to be a great scientist. So… I figure ‘neither’ suits the answer the best.
You are on the verge of death. You know there is no way to survive and there’s no coming back. Choose any of the following to answer: What is your last wish? Your last regret? Last thoughts? How do you feel? Who is the last person you think of other than your killer?
[That made her stop. Those were the questions of a heartless reporter after a trainwreck asking a survivor ‘how do you feel?’ The answer was obvious. Those answers always were.] You’re joking, right? I guess… My last wish would be that I didn’t die in vain. That I died for something or left some sort of legacy for the world. It’s better than dying for no reason… I want to believe that when I do die, I left some mark on this life so I won’t be forgotten for whatever good reasons I could manage.
Someone comes to you to ask for the time. How would you respond?
[Thinking on it seriously, she paused to give it consideration.] I’d likely check my watch then let them know the time. There is no need to be rude or withhold such simple information.
You are a given a mission. Would you complete it effectively or would you goof off and do something else? Expand a little on the response.
I take any given work or mission with utter seriousness. I would not shirk my responsibilities. Doing so could result in the death or injury of another. I realize the repercussions of my actions and take that into consideration at all times. [Responsible. Confident. She had to be if she wanted to get anywhere. And that included making it through such inane questions as these.]
[Third Person]
“Mama, what are you so worried about?” Watching the elder woman pace, her dark eyes fell on the clutch of gnarled aged hands behind the woman’s back. The tightly pulled back salt and pepper hair on the matron’s head did nothing to stop the severity of the picture painted before her. “I’m just going as a scientist. It’s not like I’ll be on the front lines with a gun. It’s preposterous.”
“All of it is.. pre… p… ridiculous! You are being a stupid girl.” Maria flinched at the words tinged with the heavy accent but didn’t back away when her mother turned to face her with similar eyes and a stubbornness she knew too well in herself. “Will you make me lose another child? Is that what you want?”
Heart clenching in her chest, she took a step forward; she caught her mother’s hands in her own and pulled them to her chest. “Sometimes out of the bad comes something good, right mama? It’s my only chance to be what I want to be! Don’t you see that? I have to take a risk and go where I don’t want to go if I want to be someone.”
“No. You are a stubborn girl that is going too far.” The hard line of the matron’s jaw made her duck her head a little and focused her eyes on the woman’s dress idly tracing the brocade pattern to calm her thoughts.
“Please… just try to be happy for me?” When no words came her eyes closed. “There is no other way. It’s a chance of a lifetime for me. For a woman.”
“Stay here. Find a man and work in the doctor’s office. You can be just as happy there.” Standing at an impasse, Maria lifted her eyes to her mother and shook her head. It couldn’t be done and she refused to be happy with ‘just enough’.
“I’ll come home to you and I’ll be a doctor. You’ll see. I’ll be someone you can be proud of.” And not the social pariah her mother saw her as now.
Their eyes locked a moment and the old woman shook her head. “Foolish girl.” And the woman didn’t have to say she was proud for Maria to know. Smiling softly, she moved closer wrapping her arms about her mother’s shoulders. “Come home. That is all I ask.”
[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?]
I really wanted to get Maria out more. That and I love the mun that plays Peggy and wanted to get her a friend to talk to.
[Which rule was your favorite and why?]
No Character Aus. I have to admit that when I was in other comms that was a major issue for panfandom. It caused confusion and chaos pretty frequently.
[Where did you hear about Somarium?]
From
th3rightpartner [Any questions?]
Not really. I think this is a nice set up and I’m curious to see how it plays out.
