So tonight I was working on my 'play list' for my history of rock & roll class in the fall. I was looking at Girl Groups from the 1960s that I might want to highlight and one of the groups that stands out is the Crystals - who had two great songs 'Da Doo Ron Ron' and 'Then He Kissed Me.'

However, they also had this lovely item: 'He hit me and it ( Read more... )

OMG :P

The only positive thing about that song is that is should definitely generate some good discussion in your class.

*nod* I can't wait to find some sort of history article about women in the late 50s/early 60s to pair it with

There is an article from Ladies' Home Journal from (I think) 1957 titled something like "Ways to be a Good Wife" or "21 ways to best care for your husband". I can't remember the exact title, but that's what it is--a list of how to be a good wife/care for husband.

One of MrWheezy's coworkers read this for a history class which is why he looked it up (I'll ask him when I see him what the article is called--he may remember). He showed it to me saying, "Sweetie! You've got to come read this bulls**t! It's hilarious!" I'll keep him . . . ;D

You are probably far better at finding articles than I am, but I'll let you know if either of us finds it.

I'll do a search for it.... I know that some truly mind-boggling stuff out there - and I know that rock music still is full of sexism - but still.

Can you imagine the blow back a group would get today for singing something like this?
