I thought the crankiness was OVER when comps was...

...but I guess not.  I still find myself on edge, sometimes near-tears.  I have begun to think very seriously about my future (or, more appropriately, OUR future)--including future living arrangements, jobs, kids, etc.  Of course, this all hinges on whether or not I pass comps (I find out Wednesday)...which adds another layer of difficulty ( Read more... )

You know, there is a third option that we haven't discussed yet....

You want to live in Minneapolis to be close to your family, but aren't completely opposed to living here.

I want to live in Akron to be close to my family, but am not completely opposed to living in MN...

So why don't we each live where we want and visit each other instead? We can afford twice as many visits from only needing one ticket per! :P (Of course, that whole two mortgages thing could get a little out of hand...)

Methinks this isn't "feasible" especially for the whole having kids part.

i would love to have some words of wisdom for you...but i am totally the opposite...i am a fly by the seat of my pants, and when that doesn't work, hope the skivvies hold up to whatever comes next... i've pulled so many plans out of my arse over the years that sometimes things work better if i don't plan than when i do... cause unfortunately the only person i can count on to be somewhere all the time is myself (please take no offense at this, i am not saying anything about you, or your friends, or our chad ( ... )

What is interesting about my planning is that my plans aren't always concrete...I've learned time and time again that I have to be prepared for opportunities or events I wasn't expecting (i.e. not getting into a Ph.D. program immediately after my Master's lead to being able to teach for a year), but it still makes me anxious.

As for only being able to count on yourself, I know that feeling all too well. Why am I somtimes a control freak? Because I know *I* will get it done. Relying on others can be risky...but it also can provide many benefits. I guess just being careful who you rely on and when is important.

I don't need to do GREAT on comps, just pass!

I appreciate your support. I don't usually cry over my finger nails, particularly since I bite them. :)

I agree that planning, in general, is a good thing, however, since nobody I know is omniscient, the general fluidity of life is going to catch you off guard occasionally.

Unfortunately for you, you can't make a planner out of a non-planner, you of all people should understand that that is a core personality trait can be modified/mitigated to a degree but not changed.

Would you really want Hiro to be meaningfully different from himself since I get the idea that you love him, not an idealized version of what he might be with certain adjustments?

Good luck with not losing your mind before getting the results of your comps just remember, losing your mind won't make the results different one way or the other and that no matter what the results you've got a family, friends, and most especially a guy with a wafro who don't think you suck not matter what the results (well, maybe the guy with the wafro thinks you suck but what happens in your bedroom stays in your bedroom ;p).

I'm not by any means saying that there should be changes made by anyone--just that it SUCKS that this is one area we don't match up. You of all people should be used to bitching! ;-)

And dirrrrrrty.
