i don't know what day it is, or how many days it has been. i believe it was a fort night ago, i was captured by the hippies and interagated. i was torchered and enlighted. i also had my mind blown a few times

Some thoughts (maybe more/answers later): 1. Is it "progress" to increase ease of life but decrease meaning of life? 2. Is there a way to increase both ease and meaning? 3. Why do we have money? 4. Reverting to a trading system (one more basic than the monetary system) would make life harder. 5. Or, forcing the government to provide us with our necessary goods is strikingly similar to socialism/communism, ideas that have been shown to fail under real-world implementation. 6a. Is community service based solely on consumption? How is the consumption of a corporation/company/business discerned from the consumption of the individual? 6b. In general, how is consumption measured? 7. Also, do people in "more meaningful" jobs (such as doctor, teacher, etc.) get breaks on community service? If so, how is a job defined as meaningful? 8. Using criminals to provide all the community service a country needs seems a bit impractical/impossible

1. by increasing the ease in life we are elimintating the physical hardships. this will leave us more time to actually enjoy living life, granted if you are not a lazy person, but with my plan lazy people will no exsist because everyone will love living life. Also, although there is no unwanted physical hardship, there is always emotion and feeling. the meaning of life is not rated by how much physical labor you do but how much feeling and emotion you have

you're describing either a utopia or a third world country. chaos would erupt either way. human nature doesn't work in this way...people are much to lackadaisical, voracious, and egocentric. i agree that the problems you are arguing are protuberant issues in our society. but your solutions have such an extremist ideal. this existentialist outlook you propose would result in a loss of motivating force that would ultimately bring about destruction of the society.

you are thinking to anthropacentric. it is our captist culture that drives us, americans, to greed and over consumption.
most other cultures, such as ones in third world countries or ones not controled by ads and "big business", are very friendly and sharing. When you can trust you're neighbors and trust that there will be an abundance and that there IS an abundance and enough for everyone, that is when people stop being greedy and people share.
its all about thinking like a kid, we all need to share a little bit more.

fair enough.
it's just never going to work.
you can have all the friendliness you want...but they are still third world countries. america is a thriving, first world country. obviously not in all areas...but clearly our capitalist culture is creating a mecca. what third world, even second world, countries are thriving at all? and those that are rebounding and creating a better environment for the people are doing so at such a limited, extensive rate and manner. if those countries were to be taken over by our modern western influences they would prosper greatly. prime example: saudi arabia. had the secular government been removed...would it have worked

whats the deal with all the hippie talk? where did you go to encounter so many hippies? i hang out with some hippies and i think the secret is that its easy to never shower and never do anything and its fun. they are always happy because i guess thats all a hippie needs. also, once you stop showering daily its very easy to go at least a week without thinking you need to shower. thats when you realize the only shower you ever take is an axe shower and you probably smell but it doesnt matter. you are totally right about there being different kinds of hippies. i dont think i could ever be a real hippie though since i am too dependent on my speakers and tv for entertainment, at least i think i am. hippies are cool though, i think.
every year for the past 3 years on the week that earth day is on(and 4/20), these hippies have a week long camp out on the mall of our campus. they say its a protest but its just an excuse to have a festival. there are bands and drum circles till 3 in the morning.
hippies are cool but i think a lot of them are trying to hold on to the ideas of the last hippie generation, they need to realize times have changed. the new hippie needs his ipod when the drum circle is over.
