pianodan and I are going to Stockholm, Helsinki, and St. Petersburg in August. We were waffling about whether or not to include all three, but we just found plane tickets that let us fly into Stockholm and then out of Helsinki -- for LESS than flying into and out of one or the other! So plane tickets are bought, and our itinerary is shaping up thusly:

I'm so excited for you! I love travelling. It's so great that you and PD get to go together!

I've never been to any of those cities (or countries, for that matter), and thus have no suggestions. But I sure do have lots of enthusiasm for you!

I'm very fortunate, in that my university will pay for my plane ticket over and for any expenses related to the conference (hotel during conference, etc.), so that makes it easy to justify bringing PD along -- we really only have to pay for one plane ticket instead of two.

(We'll pay for all other non-conference-related expenses, of course.)

And I love traveling as well, although I do get a little neurotic about it right before I go. (And while I'm planning.)

Ugh, I've had Lakrits. A friend of mine from grad school is married to a Swedish girl who acknowledged that everyone hated the stuff but would still bring it to parties. Once we got drunk enough we would all try it again and remember why we hated it.

Good to know about St. Petersburg. I don't frequently wear headscarves, but I'll make sure not to while we're there.

Awesome, thanks! I've been reading up on Gamla Stan and the other major neighborhoods/attractions -- I can't wait to go! We're only going to have a couple of days there as well, so thanks for the advice!
