Atari 2600 is a second-gen console, dude. Switchable cartridges are mainstream. I play on a Binatone TV Master. You've probably never heard of it.

We bought a Wii U a couple of years ago. The kids don't play with it all that much anymore - possibly because I haven't bought new games for ages. Big pull for them was Skylanders, which is a whole other world of money pit.

Ah, yes - mine nearly got keen on Skylanders when we were stuck next to a display waiting for something, but I managed to avoid that. Lego Dimensions seems very similar in marketing structure, alas.

We decided that we didn't need a dedicated platform - even a Wii - and that the comps and iPads and so on are fine. These days Child is not keen on or impressed by people who boast about their latest Whizzy Platform Thing, which we reckon is a Win. It isn't as if his life hasn't been plagued by one moneypit after another, and we are disproportionately pleased when we avoid one. If you hear a "hah! YES!" from Wolvercote it will be us, and you'll know why.

Yes - avoiding moneypits is a good plan.
