All-seeing eyes

What happens when you see something? What goes in to and/or comes out of your eyes?

Genuine question: I'm interested in what people think. It's not supposed to be difficult or a trick.

Edit: Clarification: the kitten is sleeping, so it cannot see you.

I'm guessing the kitten also has eyes?
So it is also seeing me by the same mechanism by which I see it
(Which kind of makes me want to tick the In and Out simultaneously button but I don't like the wording of "they come out of" - neither of us is emitting light (unless it's very unusual kitten!) so I went for In button but acknowledge that from the kitten's perspective the rays/waves/particles/energy are coming out of me and In to the kitten's eyes ...

Doh! I didn't think of that. Let's imagine that it's a sleeping kitten.

Also, kittens' eyes don't open immediately after birth.

Perhaps a properly designed universe would have different physics for very young kittens.
