Good Penny, Lucky Penny, Shiny Penny, Bad Penny

History

Penelope Anne Drizkowski has two things she can never abandon: a very unfortunate name and her talent for magic. Born and raised in San Francisco by her moderately wealthy old great-aunt Eudora, Penelope was always a bit of an outsider, by choice mind you. Pretty but strange and always more interested in the past than the present she dreamed her days away and wrote goth poetry in her notebooks and always wore all black, never really fitting in or trying to with her schoolmates. She was and is the classic representation of a perky goth. She expected to graduate from SFSU with an english degree and spend her life happily as a starving writer. Then things got complicated...

One day she Awakened.

Awakening, as it was explained to her by the mages she fell in with, the Hollow Ones, is when your eyes are opened to the true nature of the universe, looking past the lie that is static reality. By seeing the Truth you can manipulate it by focusing your will on it which, for Penny at least, usually means cobbling together spells that 'feel' like they should work. For her that means throwing together Jewish mysticism, Catholic heretical Rosicrucian sorcery and some Chinese and Japanese magical influences and seeing what sticks!

Her main aptitude is apparently dealing with spirits, she seems to accidentally rouse and befriend them constantly from her old bearcat car to her My Neighbor Totoro coin-purse to a little glass frog with a fire spirit inside of it. She also has generally amazing luck, hence her nickname of Lucky Penny. She calls it her Serendipity Overdrive and she's found she has the ability to manipulate luck and fortune around her as if she were playing with it like threads, tugging on this and that to make things happen. This takes a lot out of her though so she doesn't do it often.

It came to pass that Penny ran afoul of a dark witch after (totally accidentally) picking up the Golden Pear and it's key, the Silver Nutmeg, the two artifacts that when used together reveal the formula for creating a Philosopher's Stone and thus the recipe for immortality. Long story short the two dueled and Penny not only won the right to the artifacts but under Mage law also the dark witch Jodi's wager, being her familiar and a case of her most prized mystical possessions. Now Penny has Mr. Mistoffelees, a chalice that drains the life of one's enemy to heal oneself, a Hand of Glory now called Thing and a small pot of flight oil.

Penny's english degree doesn't do much for getting her work but thanks to her amazing luck she seldom needs for money, and her frugal nature makes sure she saves what little she gets. She has had some interesting jobs in the past dealing with her nature, though, such as acting as governess for a newly-turned Vampire businessman's children, who also happen to be possible future-werewolves thanks to his dearly departed wife's bloodline. That was interesting indeed.

Penny spends most of her time meddling in people's business, goth-club hopping and reading. Lots and lots of reading.

Personality

If you couldn't tell from her history, Penny is a well-read, composed, witty and urbane woman who wouldn't dream of relying on her looks, body or pretty face even though she could. No matter what she does or how nervous she is she can act like she does it with perfect self assurance and this confidence and her natural wit are a big part of what people tend to find attractive about her.

Given the sort of world she comes from Penny's morals are a bit... skewed. She seldom has just friends, she gathers FAMILY around her really and if you threaten them she has many and myriad ways to make your life strange and painful. And she will with no hesitation. She's even stooped to using dark magic more than once to get her way and it's this sort-of-secret callousness that is one of her weaknesses. She doesn't go about touting this attitude but deep down it's part of what keeps her out of serious relationships, of which she's had few.

Of course there's also the magic to blame for that, it's hard to keep a man when you have spirit friends around you lurking just out of sight of the real world at all times and the most bizarre situations can keep you from making dates! Not to say she ISN'T interested in romance but she'd prefer to keep it casual, more than likely.

The problem is she relies on her magic now. She almost takes it for granted, if it was easier for her to do she probably would. Even her livelihood often relies on tricks and luck and burying idols of saints in Golden Gate Park. When it comes to defending herself she has problems doing it directly (I.E. with violence), but she has friends for that, indirectly she's amazing at getting herself out of bad situations or turning them around so they suit her instead.

Looks

Penny is very pale, almost ghost-pale, and its not all makeup either. Her hair is shoulder length and when down it hangs about her in tendrils. Her eyes are very blue, almost electric, and her face is quite pretty and rounded with full lips and big eyes and just the right angles to her mouth and jaw. She touts a very Victorian goth style, often wearing funeral dresses and veils and ugg boots that swathe her body in gauzy black cloth and usually include corsets that flatter her body.
