Jim reached up and took his brother's hand, feeling the bigger palm enclosing around his. "What's going on?" He asked, eyes narrowed against the bright sun as it poured down over them. He wriggled his toes in the sun-warmed dirt, nose wrinkling at the feeling of it. He should have been wearing his shoes. "Why did we have to be quiet?" He wanted to know.
"Because Frank's cranky today," Sam explained, dragging Jim along behind him. Everything was quiet and still in the warmth of the early summer morning.
Sam had only been out of school for a week and things were already going wrong with Frank. He hoped that Frank would be gone to the garage by the time they made it back.
They came to the edge of a cornfield and stopped. Sam crouched to look Jim in the eyes. "Do you want me to carry you?"
Jim didn't like when Frank got cranky. He screamed, and when he was drunk, hit sometimes. That was rare, at least for him. He knew Sam got hit too, but as long as they were together it was okay. "Uh huh!" The bad thoughts vanished and Jim reached up with both hands, eyes bright, "Piggy back ride?"
Sam hefted Jim up onto his back. After a bit of shifting Jim's weight around, he found a comfortable hold. It wasn't hard to carry Jim. He was little for his age.
