Bones headed down to Sam's room. Well, his old room. People who were set to be reassigned had been told to pack their things, and though Bones was trying to use what pull he had, there was no guarantee that Sam would be back in this room. Might not have been fair, for him to be in there by himself, but fuck. It was worth a try.
So as he stepped into the room, he thought about the first time he saw it, putting away Doctor Puri's things after his death. Bones couldn't stay there, didn't sleep there until it was really his room, under Jim's Captaincy, when they left Earth for their first mission. A lot of memories in this room, good and bad, and as he stood in the middle of it, he looked (and felt) a little nostalgic.
Sam emerged from the bathroom to find McCoy there. He grinned.
"You came."
Even after Yule-whatever, Sam still only had enough possessions to fill one of the boxes after the clothes and padds he would be taking down to the colony were accounted for. It was more a matter of making sure that the doctor hadn't tucked anything away during his tenancy that he would miss when Sam got evicted.
Bones turned to see Sam, without his shirt, standing there.
"Yeah." He took three steps toward Sam, then looked at him.
Since listening to George talk to them about his feelings, how he thought this would all end, Bones had spent a lot of time wondering about it, about them. Why they were doing this, when it seemed to make Jim a lot of people upset? When it didn't really seem to be what Sam wanted. When it couldn't possibly end in any sort of satisfying way for Sam, not if he wanted something that was just his.
Bones was pretty sure that given a choice, Sam wanted something exclusive and monogamous, and Bones couldn't offer that to him. Yet Sam stood there, looking back at him.
Sam stood there, not sure if he should close the gap or not. This was strangely awkward for them. He leaned forward and picked up a shirt off of the bed, unsure if putting it on would alleviate the awkwardness or not.
"I tried to put most of your stuff in the boxes they gave me."
