Summer! I got here Sunday evening, then Monday morning had my first meeting and then moved in (which really wasn't all that painful), and yesterday I started actually working. The first thing I have to do is educate myself a bit about the whole process of "greening" a campus generally, and solar technologies specifically, and then I get to do some investigative work on what kind of solar technologies we want to employ in future renovations to the Weston Field facilities. I'm learning all kinds of exciting things. Yesterday I had grand visions of living in a passive solar-heated house, which involves large, strategically placed south facing windows and then a wall of either brick, water, or other absorbent material, plus some ventilation system and good insulation.
Then today all day we had met with some people from Philips Andover who are interested in campus sustainability and wanted to see how we were doing things and how the operation got off the ground. Highlights included Thai Garden lunch, and then a tour of the bowels of Paresky, the boilers/cogeneration at facilities, and an expedition to the roof of Schow to check out the photovoltaics!
After dinner Dave started to teach me how to throw a frisbee... uh-oh! It was a lot of fun, but I'm still kind of embarrassed by my own lack of skillz, so it will be a while yet (if ever) before I take it beyond tossing in the odd quad. It's sooo nice to be back, even though I wasn't gone for very long, but so far I'm thoroughly enjoying this apples to apples playing, green river dipping, wine sipping, bread baking, schow roofing atmosphere that is the campus in the summer.
