I've had several people over the years claim to me that ATX is really a power supply specification. I firmly believe this to be a load of horseshit (based on things like, say, reading the spec!) Power supplies have to be adapted to the appropriate main board form factor, therefore ATX, Mini-ATX, AT, Baby-AT, etc all demand different wiring harness adapters to power up their systems, therefore a power supply must be rated and designed to comply with that motherboard. The powersupply is not an "ATX" but it IS an "ATX Power Supply" because it meets the power requirements of the board it will connect to, and must have the correct adapter.

So in that regard, ATX IS a power supply spec, but it's based on the mainboard the supply must work with.
