The missing of Napster

Apr 19, 2006 15:46

Is there anything today comparable to what napster was in its heyday for sheer variety of music? There are many many songs I've gone looking for through iTunes, etc. that I just plain can't get. The sad thing is I'm not even talking about particularly obscure stuff... Painful, methinks. Just painful.

I don't really want to spend $15 on a CD ( Read more... )

I'm also a very strong believer in the public domain.

I'd be perfectly happy to pay a buck for the song, I just really don't want to pay $15. Ja know?

I could burn you a mix cd if I have one or two of the tracks that you're looking for. It's ok to share if it's a "mix cd".

The issue isn't the spending of the money, it's the inconvenience of getting the tracks. The real power of Napster was that you could go on and randomly get 20 different versions of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. The selection and variety was absolutely amazing.

iTunes, for instance, has only one version of "Bugger Off", and doesn't have:
"Midnight Girl, Sunset Town" (Sweethearts of the Rodeo),
"That's What You Do (When You're In Love)" (The Forester Sisters),
"Don't Throw Me in the Briarpatch" (Keith Palmer).

I bet I would have found at least two of them without too much trouble on the Napster-of-Old.

:thinks of something: I wonder... hmmm.... I'll have to check on that though. I'd forgotten about that bit

So, um, I'm guessing that you don't have any of those...

you can get what you want vervain_ashe May 2 2006, 17:40:33 UTC
You can get just ONE track if you want. Find the album online or open it from the Real Player or Media or cd playing programs, go to the online search, and you should find it. If the album can be split up into individual songs, it WILL be. I've done it before with Real Player. Or do a regular online search for the album through Google, select the album, and again, if individual tracks are itemized by the artist, then you can purchase the song. Usually costs around a buck.
