And on a completely unrelated and equally depressing note...

I just learnt today that two good friends of mine lost their girl friends of eight and six years, respectively, while they were getting shot at in Afghanistan.

And it makes me damn sick to keep hearing those stories.

And it keeps happening. At least one of the women in question managed to inform her partner herself. We've had enough cases when soldiers come back and find their homes empty (to the point of all furniture and money gone, so that the army now tells soldiers to not give their girl friends or partner access to their bank accounts, but their parents...).

They both, especially the one who just came back a few weeks ago, now are in that "all women suck" state, and it is so hard to not hate a significant part of the human race for what they do to these guys.
Divorce rates among soldiers always have been worse than with the rest of the population, but with the deployment it's been getting worse.

And while I understand that it is hard for a woman to be alone in Germany with the kids and sometimes not to hear from your husband or partner for weeks (one of the two I mentioned was QRF, the other did OMLT and so both tended to be away from telephone and internet for days or weeks on end), it still makes me sick to think they consider it an acceptable reaction to call their partners in Afghanistan and tell them "by the way, I just moved out".
