I think the uncertainty is the point. It also makes the title so much more significant, don't you agree?

I agree with everyone else, I think it's intentionally left open and a bit confusing.

My take is that he's dead and everyone can see his ghost. Roy finally realizes Nathan is exactly what he wants, no matter what the others think, and they walk off together, never to be seen again.

My interpretation is that Nathan is dead, but the spiritual, dream like quality of the ending means there is no certainty and leaves room for hope. Whilst if we took it literally and accept that Nathan is dead then obviously Roy wouldn't be able to see him, they wouldn't be able to touch or talk to each other. But if we don't take it so literally then it can be interpreted in a much more positive and uplifting way, so that even though Nathan's dead they're still together, in whatever dreamlike way that is.

I really really did not articulate that as well as I intended!

I just read the book over for the fourth time, and I'm still wondering the same thing (I actually just posted something in my journal on it). Although, I was fairly positive after the last time I read it he was dead, and it was his spirit who found Roy. Maybe not the actual human, LIVING Roy, but his idea of heaven was being with Roy for eternity... if that makes sense. It's one of those things in my head that I cant quite word properly for it to make sense for everyone else, lol.
