Well, where I'm from, relationships can go into four quadrants. Being flushed means you have romantic feelings, being pale means you are really good friends, being ashen means you're working as the go-between between two people, and being caliginous means you -- well. You hate the person but in a way that implies you still want to have romantic relations with them.

So hate's kind of necessary, but only like that!
