As some of you may know, I'm not a very religious person. Point of fact, I was a hardcore athiest for a time (something that is obvious if you read through my rantings in this journal) and am now very much a moderate agnostic. The NIV is going to be best for a close translation that is easy to read.
The others are either a very close translation that makes difficult reading or too loose a translation that puts it in the words of the person translating it.
I'll of course look forward to the discovery and pray for the best.

This will be an interesting journey. I find myself in pretty much the same place, vis a vis religion/church/spirituality things. Were I to undertake this project (and you doing so has me considering it) I would skip the Old Testament. I just can not find any relevance for it today, other than as a compilation of Jewish oral history diluted through numerous church committees over the centuries. The vast majority of problems I have with Christianity from a dogma perspective are found in the Old Testament ( ... )

Ok, will try to give a reader's digest here. First I am so happy you are going thru this journey- I don't mean this in a religious sense but in a self-journey since. I had always question your thought-process based on neg experinces w/ churches as being the reason your turned towards athesim ( ... )
