Salary or not, those are NOT valid reasons for denying someone a raise. What she does with her money is not their business. If the company isn't making enough, that might be an understandable reason, but I'm willing to bet even TELLING her about the other reasons is inappropriate.

It's too bad there isn't a human resources director around there somewhere. I'm sure you could get this guy for a LOT of stuff, clean him out, and never have to work again...okay, maybe not to that extent... :) But still, there's got to be someone you can tell about all of this.

GOOD LUCK in your new job search. I hope you find something much better.

Oh heck yeah, I've looked up everything in the book including getting a union started (and i'm generally not pro-union) - but there isn't much we can do because of how small the company is and how 3 of the 5 employees are in the same immediate family.

I haven't heard good things about small, family owned businesses. You gotta do what you gotta do, quitting or knocking your boss down and taking over the company...which ever works best for you... :)

I passed along some information to my HR lady here, just to see if she had any advice, I deleted any identifying details, except that you were a friend of mine, and you work for a small, family owned business. Her response:

WOW! First of all reading about your friend's situation made me cringe. Honestly... I have no clue where to begin but I know for sure that it sounds like a BAD situation and totally inappropriate for her employer. I hope you don't mind but I forwarded this to Holly (our HR Manager) to pick her brain. She'll probably have a few helpful suggestions. Yikes!! Your poor friend....
