Notes: These two have been eating my brain!
Finn was the first to know. He may have been dim, but he had known Puck since before he was Puck. Back when Puck had been Noah, a little three year old who offered to share his crayons after his own got stepped on. But then he went and became Puck, the guy who liked to go around and step on everybody’s crayons just for kicks. And while Puck may have annoyed the hell out of Finn sometimes he was still his best friend, who every once and awhile could prove himself as the best friend that Finn missed every day.
At first Finn was really annoyed with Sam for taking his place, well, everywhere. The kid was a better singer, quarterback, and then Puck’s best friend, it just wasn’t fair. So Finn mostly just sat on the other side of the locker room and watched as Sam jumped up on the bench laughing as Puck snapped his wet towel out at Sam. It was clear Finn was pretty jealous when he actually missed Puck trying to snap him with the towel. Seriously, how the hell did he start to actually miss getting hit by Puck’s towel? It was just yesterday that Rachel was talking to him about how many germs lived in those towels and it would be in his best to start showering a home. Of course he wasn’t about to start doing that, someone might think he was afraid of the locker rooms, which he totally wasn’t. Though if Rachel wanted to start showering at home with him…
There was a loud squeak that cut Finn out of his thoughts and he looked up just in time to see Puck’s towel swing out and hit Sam’s foot, causing him to jump up on one of his feet. Losing his balance, Sam started to fall backwards and Finn counted the seconds until the whole locker room started to laugh at the new kid, but it never came. Instead, Finn watched as Puck quickly reached out to latch onto Sam’s wrists and just as quickly pulled him into Puck’s lap. Finn had never seen anything like that, because if it had been any other guy, himself include, Puck would have let them fall just for his own amusement if nothing else. A pang of jealousy hit, Finn’s gut. They had known each other for years, and now he had known this kid for a month and they’re closer than Finn could hope to see.
Looking over at the two of them, Sam was still sitting in his lap, trying to catch his breath and Puck was still holding on to Sam’s wrists. “Why hadn’t Puck let go yet?” Finn wondered as he watched a smile spread across Puck’s face, only it wasn’t a Puck smile. A Puck smile was usually a bit more of a smirk and meant that I like to cause problems for everyone else because it’s funny that way, and this wasn’t that type of smile. This smile was the smile of the three year old who declared Finn his best friend, who helped his sister with his homework, who thought Quinn having his baby was something close to magic. No, this was the smile of Noah, being shown in front of everyone in the locker room, even if Finn was the only one that saw it.
And oh. Oh. OH! Finn suddenly got it. He finally understood why Puck was spending all his time with Sam, and it was the same reason he spend so much time with Rachel. After all the glares he shot the clueless Sam, he finally understood why he was so special. He was special because he could make Noah, not Puck, smile and that made Finn happy.
So Finn gathered his stuff and scurried off to join Puck and Sam. After all, if Sam was going to date Puck, it was Finn’s job to make sure Sam was good enough for his best friend.
