Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter ThreeChapter Four Dr. Lillian Perkins was an older, heavy set woman who constantly wore glasses that were heavily bejeweled.
“Musical intonation therapy is when we work on getting him to understand sung phrases and eventually speaking,” She explained and handed a packet to each of the Andersons and Kurt.
“But he already can understand us singing,” Kurt said, flipping through the packet.
“True, he understands memorized songs,” Lillian nodded. “We’ll try to get him to understand sung phrases that he doesn’t already know. The idea is for him to learn to sing out what he wants to say and then eventually make it so that he no longer has to sing.”
“That makes sense,” Kurt glanced over to where Blaine was staring at the packet with furrowed brows. The packet included some illustrations for him but they weren’t very clear.
“So what first?” Scott studied the packet.
“First I’ll hum and tap out rhythms on his hand. Then we will do it together. Third, I will fade out and just have him hum by himself and last I will tap out a rhythm and have him respond,” Lillian explained, pointing out the illustrations to Blaine.
“How will that help?” Amy asked.
“It’ll help him understand and repeat completely randomly constructed phrases,” She explained. “Now, remember that he might not be able to do this. MIT is not always effective.”
“We’re willing to do whatever we can to help Blaine,” Scott replied quickly, standing up quickly.
“Okay,” Lillian smiled brightly. “Let’s get started.”
She would hum out a note and tap her finger to a beat on Blaine’s hand. After a few repetitions she motioned for him to hum along with her. He had a little trouble matching the pitch and looked worried when he saw the look on Kurt’s face.
After about forty-five minutes Blaine got incredibly frustrated that he wasn’t able to match the pitch and stopped responding. Lillian made a quick note in his chart and smiled at the frowning Blaine.
“We made some progress,” She smiled at the Andersons who were watching from the corner. “I’m optimistic.”
Blaine did not look too excited. His eyes were dark and his arms were folded over his stomach. Kurt gave him a warm smile but Blaine just looked down at the sheets.
When his parents moved to Blaine’s bedside he waved them away and shook his head. Quickly, Blaine pulled his covers over his head and curled up the best he could.
“He’s frustrated,” Amy whispered to Scott and Kurt who were still standing in the corner of the room. “I know he was so excited about the singing and probably expected this to go much quicker.”
“What if this doesn’t work. What if we only are able to speak to him through song,” Scott looked worried. “What if he doesn’t get better.”
“We’ll do the best we can and if Blaine doesn’t get better we’ll deal with it the best we can,” Amy nodded sharply.
“I just want to do everything we can,” Kurt whispered and the Andersons smiled at him before glancing down at the pile of blankets.
“We’ll go grab lunch,” Amy said slowly, rubbing Blaine’s shoulder through the sheets. “Do you want anything Kurt?”
“No thanks,” Kurt smiled softly and watched as the couple walked out.
An almost silent sob came from the blankets and Kurt felt his heart breaking. He let out a small comforting sound and pulled the blankets back to show Blaine’s tearstained face.
When Blaine saw Kurt’s questioning look he scrunched up his face in concentration to try and think of any song to fit the way he was feeling.
“Yesterday,” He sung brokenly. “All my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they’re here to stay.”
“Keep holding on,” Kurt sang back after a moment. Blaine frowned and raised an eyebrow at the song choice.
“But I’m a creep,” Blaine sang with a harsh laugh, angry and frustrated tears shining in his eyes. “I’m a weirdo, what the hell am I doing here?”
Kurt gasped softly and grabbed at Blaine’s hands, shaking his head sharply.
“I don’t care if it hurts. I wanna have control,” Blaine sobbed out. “I want a perfect body, I want a perfect soul. I want you to notice when I’m not around, you’re so fucking special.”
Tears began to stream down Kurt’s face and he shook his head again.
“I’m not half the man I used to be. There’s a shadow hanging over me,” Blaine switched songs again, sobs becoming harsher. Moving quickly, Kurt gathered his trembling body up in his arms.
“Oh, I believe in yesterday,” Kurt sang into his ear, rubbing at his arms.
