Hi! I haven't done any tutorial for ages, so I thought that maybe was time to repeat the experience :)
This will be a coloring tutorial, with curves, selective color and all that jazz.
We are going from
to
01. Start cropping your base and resize it if you want.
I usually don't, but in this case I will for avoid image heavy.
And if you want to, sharpen it once.
Here's my base, from a cap by
roniabirk:
02. Duplicate the base twice and set both layers to Screen 100%.
03. Too bright, I know. We're going to fix it soon.
Now, create a new layer, fill it with #bee4fe and set it to Color Burn 100%.
Duplicate that layer.
>>
04. Now it's too blue.
The opposite of blue is orange, so for fix the coloring a little bit
create a new layer, fill it with #ca8963 and set it to Soft Light 100%.
>>
05. The Color Balance is a very helpful friend.
Go to Image>>Adjustments>>Color Balance. And set it like
this 06. And now comes the curves.
I don't know how to use curves very well, I just play around with them and see what happens next.
For this icon I used curves like this:
(Image>>Adjustments>>Curves)
RGB
Point one: I:88 O:94
Point two: I:140 O:152
Red
Point one: I:87 O:111
Point two: I:137 O:161
Green
I:150 O:153
Blue
I:135 O:138
07. Let's give it some color.
Image>>Adjustments>>Hue/Saturation. Set the Saturation +14.
08. And now Selective Color.
(Image>>Adjustments>>Selective Color)
As with the curves, I always play around with this tool, I don't have presets for this.
Reds
Cyan: -60
Magenta: -3
Yellow: +17
Yellows
Cyan: -17
Yellow: +10
Magentas
Cyan: -71
Magenta: +98
Yellow: +42
Neutrals
Cyan: +39
Magenta: -9
Yellow: -22
09. Maybe you think that I've finished, but I always like to see more yellow and orange in my icons.
Now create another Selective Color Layer and set it like this, please:
Reds
Cyan: -39
Magenta: +2
Yellow: +15
Yellows
Cyan: -28
Magenta: +2
Yellow: +7
Neutrals
Cyan: +8
Magenta: +4
Yellow: +2
And c'est fini! It wasn't that difficult, was it?
