Revenge 3x05 - "Control"

Oct 29, 2013 02:32

Revenge is fantastic this season, especially Nolan/Emily-wise! I've missed out on reviewing the last few eps, but I'm definitely doing a favourite scenes post at some point this week to make up for it. ;)

So, did you guys guess correctly who tried to kill Conrad?

I have to admit that Revenge got me. I liked Victoria for it because I felt she has the biggest motive to get rid of him & he would want to keep appearances since they are supposed to be in cahoots. Aiden was also too quick to throw shade at Jack, which made him look guilty. Patrick, as the new kid in town, seemed the least plausible to me because he was just too obvious a suspect. Maybe that was the point... Occam's Razor style. Victoria coaxing Charlotte into confessing was great.

It's safe to say that Patrick isn't the one who shot Emily because it will be a cold day in hell before she apologizes to HIM. I feel like it might be Aiden, and Emily is in on it. The Aiden/Victoria tandem is there for a reason, and we all know that she's onto Emily this season & wants her gone, but she isn't counting on the fact that Aiden is still in love w/ Emily.

IDK, does anyone think that Emily gets shot for real?

ALTHOUGH, I got a very curious reply from Gabe yesterday, which makes me wonder:

They were ALL wrong, which means that we're in for some sort of a twist!

Let's talk Nolan/Emily & Nolan/Patrick. It's difficult to mention one w/o the other, especially w/ the way the tensions are rising in the fandom (for good reason!) concerning what Nolan/Patrick could mean for Nolan/Emily.

I wasn't so sure initially, but as of this episode, I think it's pretty obvious that Nolan is falling for Patrick. I think that initially, he might have only been interested in him in terms of the revengenda, but the fact that Patrick responded to his feelings changed everything. My sweet, romantic Nolan, what have you got yourself into? The scene where he opened up to Patrick was beautiful because Nolan hardly ever talks about his own emotions... and hardly ever gets asked about them.

I've also found Patrick's response particularly interesting:

- It's a defense. People have been... mean, dishonest... Making it hard for me to trust them.
I screwed up... with you. I'm sorry.

- Things are complicated enough thanks to the two women in our lives.

- Believe me, I know.

Clearly, the "women in their lives" Patrick mentions are Victoria & Emily, who are always up in arms. I think Patrick mentions that because he will always put Victoria above everyone else (loved the irony of her unassumingly blessing their union later on), and he feels that Nolan would do the same for Emily.

However, earlier in a conversation with Emily, Nolan says he's tired of the way revenge keeps getting in the way of their personal happiness, and we can tell it's about Patrick, but he never admits it to her. He knows she won't approve & decides to put his interests before their mutual ones this time, and it's alarming because she will find out eventually, & he will have lied to her by omission which is worse than full disclosure from the get go.

Later on, we have my favourite scene of the episode, where Daniel sends Emily packing & Nolan is there to pick up the pieces, as he does, and gives her some sound advice which she listens to for a change:

-I don't know what to do.

-Yeah, well... Neither do I. Because you can't give him the one thing that he needs - YOU. The real you. All people want is for their partners to be honest with them & they catch on pretty damn quick when you're not.

How PHENOMENAL are Gabriel & Emily together? There's so much depth in their scenes. <3

It was amazing to see Emily go to Nolan for advice & trust him to have her back, and to see Nolan advise her from the heart & from his experience. HE is the one who's got her, the real her, and he realises that if she let Daniel in even for a little bit, he would never want to let her go either. At the same time, the fact that Nolan speaks about honesty in partnership while being dishonest with her about Patrick, hurts, and it hurts a great deal.

Emily tells Aiden that he is her everything (we'll come back to this later), well, that's what Emily is for Nolan - his everything. She is the love of his life, so I find it hard to believe he might turn away from her just to stay with Patrick.

Falling for the enemy's son IS a pretty compelling storyline - and here we thought it would be Emily & Daniel in S1! - but Nolan/Emily will always come FIRST for me on the show because they ARE the show, so I sincerely hope their relationship won't be sacrificed in favour of it. We're already getting less NEmily scenes with Aiden back in the picture (LOVED Nolan reminding Emily that everything goes horribly wrong with him around! She needs to listen to Nolan more!), and if Nolan & Emily fall out & barely see each other again like in S2, it will emotionally destroy me.

Tl;dr All I can do is trust the writers know what they are doing & how much NEmily means to us. I love Nolan & Patrick's chemistry (mad props to Gabriel & Justin for pulling off those steamy scenes!) & Nolan deserves to be with someone hot who has genuine feelings for him - but NOT if it means lying to Emily, or severing ties with her. It just doesn't make sense to me after everything they've been through together.

IN NOLAN'S WORDS, THINGS WON'T JUST GO SOUTH... THEY WILL GO ARCTIC.

Charlotte's faux confession to Conrad was awesome for this exchange alone:

- You can really forgive me???

- Of course I can. All I've ever wanted was for us to be family again. I mean, if this is what it took for us to have an honest exchange to heal our wounds, well, then... Charlotte, I'm grateful for what you've done.

Charlotte's face was like, "DAFUQQQ" I lol'd so hard at this, ngl. Connie is officially the Mad King.

The following Aiden/Emily exchange, I DIED:

- I'm sorry for the way I've handled Jack. You were right, my motives were not pure. I wanted him gone.

- No, I'm sorry for the way I've treated you. You came back here to help me, and I've made you feel used. But the truth is, you mean so much more to me than that. You're everything to me.

GUUURL. "You came back here to help me, and I've made you feel used?" JUST... NO. I'd no idea Emily was in this deep, but this kind of explains why this is the 100th time she's forgiven him for consistently screwing everything up?? This relationship is so toxic it makes me weep. Can you imagine what their life together would be like with Aiden constantly questioning her & requiring an explanation for her every move? EMILY, YOU DESERVE BETTER THAN THIS.

... unless you were trolling him to keep him around, iwc, WELL DONE, YOUR BEST PERFORMANCE YET.

The final scene where Emily opens up to Daniel FOR REAL was perfection:

-People think that because I lost my family, I never knew what real love was. But I did. And it was ripped away from me. I still feel that pain like it was yesterday. That's why I push people away.
I want nothing more but to stand beside you on our wedding day.

The delivery of the bolded line was particularly flawless. Emily VanCamp for all the awards.

This episode could have used more NEmily, but on the whole, I've enjoyed the ride - kudos to Ted Sullivan!

What I really like about S3 is that Who Shot Emily isn't the only major mystery.

Have we really thought about WHY Emily wants to marry Daniel, why her Revenge can't be carried out only by means of tying the knot with him? It's obviously not to cause the Graysons' financial ruin because Aiden has already taken care of that in S2. It goes beyond that.

So far this season, we see little clues about her plan here and there: Emily looking at a map with markings on it on the beach (for no reason relevant to the events of 3x03), and now, in this episode, she asks Nolan to look after her "submersible crate and a homing beacon" (LOVE that she keeps entrusting him her things!). If we consider the fact that everything leads to her wedding party at sea, it's beginning to make sense.

I've been wondering, what if Emily has decided to frame the Graysons for whatever she's planning to do on her wedding day, and getting herself "shot" is part of that plan? Or does she have something even more devious in mind?

The excitement I'm feeling right now brings back the S1 memories when we speculated about who was shot on the beach & I did a frame-by-frame analysis of the scene, lol. Good times.

Can't wait for the next episode because of um, REASONS:

Emily walking in on Nolan while he's having a bath is a scene I never knew I needed in my life before I saw this asdfghjkl CUE abundant NEmily feels (lol @ the dramatic spin they put on it in the promo tho).

I NEED IT TO BE SUNDAY ALREADY.
