In Commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the EDSA Revolution

Feb 25, 2011 08:39

It's such a strange coincidence that so many uprisings are going on elsewhere in the world, with the EDSA People Power Revolution's 25th anniversary so close at hand. It's been a quarter of a century since the world's first bloodless revolution was held here in my country, and now I watch the news with hope that the revolutions going on in other ( Read more... )

Your picture, though, is from EDSA Dos, when they were trying to place Gloria and unseat Erap, since it already has the EDSA shrine and the flyovers.

Sorry, I'm still totally not here, especially when I'm constantly reminded that if MARCOS was not such a decent person at least, we would have the Libya situation instead.

okay, image fixed! thanks again ♥

you know, marcos gave orders for the army to attack the masses during the height of the revolution. if the generals had not defected, and the soldiers themselves had not laid down their guns, there might have been bloodshed. the credit for bloodlessness should not go to marcos.

however, i'm not sure his reign should be compared to qhadafi's in any way. though marcos' reign was also marked with human rights crimes, he was still more of a statesman and less of a "mad dog," as US ex-pres reagan so nicely said about qhadafi.

Agrees with you both ways. (Since my mom is one of the casual loyalists, I guess I tend to get some wrong information. ^^; This is my problem as a creative and a person who went to UP, there are things I understand about being clamped down that a practical person who doesn't need clamping down like my mom doesn't seem to get. )

Hi, just to let you know I posted this to my links blog. With all the rumpus being kicked up in the Middle East by people who have suffered for years on end, it makes me a wee bit disappointed that our own celebration of People Power has gone unremarked by CNN and other global media outlets ( ... )

reading it again i feel like it could've stood more editing ahaha but thank you for sharing the link.

i was watching international news that day, hoping for some coverage on the People Power anniversary, too. alas, i don't think it's exciting enough for the global audience... besides, there really were bigger things happening in the world. i suppose it's just up to us as a people to keep certain memories alive.

to be honest i don't want to think of them as wasted years, i'd rather think of them as years of learning. growing up is always hard, and even at 25 years old, it seems our democracy is still young. now that the information age is making it easier for us to document and share recollections, i'm hoping we're on the hard climb up, and we'll make fewer of the same mistakes.

Yes, you're more than likely right, all these years have been "growing pains", in the most eloquent sense of the phrase. "Growing" as much of an operative word as "pain".

Because watching the Garcia hearings side-by-side with documentaries on EDSA I can be a truly painful experience. I have never wished so keenly for a Feather Duster of Doom (TM) with which to knock all these "I plead the Fifth" generals, as I do whenever I see them being questioned.

Still, all part of the growing. And if we can fix things as a result, very few will complain a few years down the line, I'm thinking.
