Based on the enthusiastic responses to the poll I posted a few weeks ago, I wanted to let you know that I have arranged to run an eight week class this summer at Mary Flynn Murphy's dance studio, which is located in Ball Square, a short walk from the Davis T. stop. This class will run from 6 PM to 8 PM on Thursday evenings and will include an hour and a half of technique and a half hour of conditioning and stretching. The class calendar is as follows:
July 1: First Class!
July 8
July 15
July 22:? I am going to be in Colorado on this date but will try and arrange a sub if there is enough interest
July 29:? Same deal -- I'll be returning from Colorado late that night but will either try and find a sub or arrange alternate class time, again if there's enough interest
August 9: back to our old tricks. From here on class will continue uninterrupted
August 12
August 19
August 26
September 2
Cost for the class is $120, or $150 if I find subs for the two weeks which I'll be in Colorado for. If you are interested in the class you must pay at least half of your tuition on the first day of class, July 1, and the second half of your tuition will be due August 5.. If you are interested in the class but cannot attend all eight sessions I can prorate your tuition accordingly. I need at least four people to commit to all eight weeks in order to cover my base costs. I need at least six people to commit to the class for all eight weeks to make any profit at all.
This class will aim to give you a working knowledge of the basic movement vocabulary of ballet, using the traditional French terminology. Most of my training is in vaganova method, which is the Russian school of ballet, but I will not be teaching a strictly vaganova class. Rather, I want to encourage my students to experiment safely and intelligently with their bodies towards the them of having greater strength, grace, flexibility, and fun inhabiting their corporeal beings. I will emphasize proper technique with the aim of letting you dance safely and for a long time. I will also help you understand the etiquette and norms of the ballet world, so that if you choose to take classes in the future with other teachers you feel comfortable and at home in the studio. If you already have some experience as a dancer, this class will serve as a gentle refresher while you get your muscle memory working again. If you have never taken a ballet class before, no worries! This will be a space free of expectations about what your body is supposed to look like or do, and full of a sense of experimentation and open inquiry.
Proper ballet technique shoes are a must -- I can tell you where to acquire peer locally, if you need, or direct you to online vendors. If you don't want to invest in a leotard and tights, yoga pants and a well fitted T-shirts and sports bra are fine. Men, you will need to buy a dance belt, which is a device a lot like a jock strap but a bit more flexible.
I'm really really hope that enough of you sign up to make this class go. I am really excited to offer it to my friends and community and excited about what I think we might all learn together.
Please get back to me as soon as possible if you intend to take the class, and feel free to e-mail me or comment here with any other inquiries.
