why have we as a people drifted so far apart? fallout from the "me" generation, a rising standard of living that allows so many to have so much, mind-boggling cultural diversity? i see the increased lack of courtesy in traffic every day, the who-cares attitudes of clerks and minions, the backlash against the many for the disrespect of the few. we're not listening to each other any more. our relationship with the "others" who make up our lives has crumbled, like we can't even think of them as people any more.
no one has the absolute truth, regardless of what anyone maintains. when did it become OK to hate someone who doesn't agree with you? i know, there are religions & political stances that have advocated hated and violence for millennia- but weren't there usually greater numbers of reasonable peaceful people that counterbalanced them? what happened?
and it's not like i haven't heard these questions over & over in the years past- but we're no closer to solving them. are we just overwhelmed by the problems, the caring that needs to be done? have we as a nation learned nothing since 9/11?

my only suggestions are to love the people you love just as hard as you can, and try to keep in mind and heart that all those other people out there in the world *are* people, who are trying to do the same thing you are. compassion and love are our only antidotes to the systemic poison of frustration and pain that gives rise to hatred and violence.
