Can you amplify the signal prior to upload and then run the noise reducer on it?

when recording to digital did you record it via the speaker playing into a microphone (either connected to the computer or a built in mic) or via the line in on your computer's sound card?

ha! No. I set up the little mini recorder next to the big clunky tape player, hit play, and closed the door. Then I just uploaded the digital file to my computer. It was a quick fix, but I think I know how to permanently fix the problem.. A friend of my advisor recommended I get a mic cable and use Audacity.

yeah, you definitely need to wire it up, not go speaker to mic, that's a bad scene.
