I don't really get the hype about NYC. It can be cool to visit for about a day, but most of the allure seems to be in the sheer VOLUME of people (and it seems I meet fewer in NYC in a day than I do in DC or IC, just because there seems to be a bit less connectedness) and in the accessibility of everything you could want WRT material goods.

NYC can be very impersonal and intimidating, all loud noises and bright lights and sharp edges, and that's why I know I could never live there. But I do like NYC, because I think like a lot of other cities it has layers, and you have to get down into the middle of it all to really enjoy it. I mean, I suppose it helps to have your first visit be when you're young and want to do all the tourist things, because that's what's readily obvious about it. But I think it's on return visits that it starts to make more sense...
