Short History, Weaveworld, and Alice are all phenomenal, if you need to narrow your list down. Ditto Halting State. To make the list longer, I really liked Stross' Glasshouse, The Atrocity Archives, and The Jennifer Morgue. Best Served Cold is good, and a follow-up to the equally good First Law trilogy. I have mixed feelings about The God Delusion (I listened to Dawkins' audiobook version, and I think his inflection probably helps because you can hear when he's being playful rather than merely acerbic; he's both in generous measure). Neverending Days is definitely interesting, and on a similar sort of level, but focussing on one particular aspect in much greater depth, Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe is a very approachable explanation of String Theory as it stood about 10 years ago. Finally, Derren Brown's Tricks of the Mind is perhaps surprisingly fascinating - I'd made up my mind years ago that I thought he was insufferable, when in fact nothing could be further from the truth. Very educational book, and his blog is rather neat
Looked up your recommendations, they looked interesting. Thanks cat! I have not read anything of Charles Stross, so put The Atrocity Archives on my list. If I'll like it, then maybe I'll get more. Seems they do not sell anything of Derren Brown at the bookshop where I tend to get my books, which is a shame. I've seen/read/heard enough about his mind tricks/observations that I want to know more.
I quite liked Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy. So will be getting Best Served Cold of course. :)
