"Are you always this tense when you drive? Sheesh. Your chest is against the wheel."
10 minutes. It had been 10 full minutes that Jiyong and Seungri had been in the car completely silent. Seungri was gripping at his wheel like he was afraid it would fall off and he stared outside the window at the road to avoid thinking about being in his car with this person he wanted to see again for this long... and about the fact that now that he had what he wanted, he did not know what to do of it and he felt absolutely pathetic for it. There were so many things he could say but his brain went totally blank just when he connected his thoughts to Jiyong. He did not know what to do about it so he opted for silence. Silence was better than stammering stupid things to that guy, was it not?
"Yah." When came a red light, Jiyong pressed his hand to Seungri's chest and made him sit back against his seat properly, "Don't be so nervous, that's exactly how accidents happen."
"S-sorry." The younger said, turning another corner.
Jiyong shook his head, "It's fine... Unless it's because of me?"
Seungri shook his head vehemently.
He asked this because the only non-awkward actions the other did since they got in the car was putting his seat belt on, starting the car and fixing his rear-view mirror's angle. He closed his door too harshly, drove too slow and did not even put any music. Jiyong hated silence; if they were not going to talk, he wanted music at least. It could probably break the opaque imaginary wall between them, too. Jiyong could know if he could get along with someone by the content of their mp3 players, if they were CD players, it was even better.
"Sooo, what's the last played song here..." Jiyong prodded the 'play' button of the car's CD player since the small screen clearly indicated that it was at the second track of a CD.
An electro-pop beat that was way too popular for its own good filled the car. Jiyong stared at Seungri and Seungri wished his car had an eject button like in spy movies so he could jet himself to Honolulu or another very far away place. Not everyone appreciated his tastes in music as it was less common for Korean kids to really be into an American artist than artists from their own country. Seungri was about to justify the why this was lingering in his CD player until he caught a glance at Jiyong.
"I fucking love this song!" Jiyong was partying alone on his seat, doing what could be called a dance that mainly consisted of some small body waves, head bopping, hips moving and some hand clapping. He winked at Seungri, "I'm bringing sexy back~ Them other boys don't know how to act!"
There was something slightly unreal about this nearly perfect person singing his most favorite song and moving to it like that. Despite being seated, Jiyong had a way to keep Seungri's eyes on him even when he should be watching the road.
"So you like JT, maknae?" The blonde asked, smiling.
"I was a huge Nsync fan when I was younger... Justin is just my ultimate bias and fave artist forever." Seungri said, chuckling.
"Nsync, how dare you! Backstreet Boys owned the 90's and still do, proof, Nsync doesn't exist anymore!" Jiyong pointed and told him off with a high-pitched mocking voice then laughed, "Kidding. Nsync is cool, though I was a Wu-Tang Clan fan."
Seungri held back the urge to ask if that was a Chinese pop group and instead asked something else, "What genre is that?"
"Hip-hop, son." The older replied, "The kind you're too young to understand."
Seungri pointed, "What? I'm 19 and I like hip-hop anyways."
"Still a baby."
"Try me."
"Don't have the CD on me."
"Then rap it yourself, you're good at it."
Jiyong looked at the other with a frown. "How do you even know I spit?"
That was the kind of moment where Lee Seunghyun wished he was someone else so he could kick the idiot he was in the butt hard enough for him to get how dumb he was. He was not supposed to know that Jiyong was able to rap since he heard this on the phone that he technically should have never had in his possession in the very first place. He was going to just look like the biggest creeper in the world if the conversation tilted toward the reason why he knew for a fact that this ability of Jiyong's existed.
"... You look like someone who would be able to. All the hip-hop-ish clothes and stuff..."
"Oh." Jiyong grinned, "Don't judge a book on its cover. A lot of wannabes dress in Colonize and can't rhyme for shit."
"Are you one of them?" Seungri asked, curious about the answer. "I want to hear."
"I think I'm decent." Jiyong shrugged. "And maybe you'll get to hear. Maaaybe."
"Really?" The driver sounded overexcited about hearing the other, "I still want to hear!"
"Laaaater." The blond man laughed, bouncing in his seat. Then Jiyong asked something something as he looked out the window, "Where are we going anyways?"
Seungri did not even know the answer to this, until he really paid attention to his surroundings . "Oh crap."
There stood the familiar building. He just drove with no destination in mind and naturally, he ended up where he always ends up after a hard day: His university's dormitory building.
"Well well well," Jiyong chuckled, "We knowin' for 30 minutes and you already be takin' me home? You nasty."
Seungri stared at the other, unsure that the other even spoke Korean. It had Korean words in it but they did not quite sound like real Korean words to him.
"Hey, watch the road!"
The driver pulled over into the school parking lot, to stop and think about how he drove there so automatically anyways. Yes, he had promised Joonhee and Changyeon that he would be back soon to tell them all about how the 'interview' with the potential new roommates went but he did not even plan to come back home until morning when the room was safe and silent enough for him to actually talk to them instead of cursing them for their 'rabbit habits'.
"Hey. Since we're here anyways, we could pick some of your stuff up and bring them back to our place since you live with us now." Jiyong suggested, adjusting his hat. "Would get stuff done."
"Yeah, why not."
It was only when they were in the dorm building that Seungri told himself that he should have thought about this twice. He noticed that when they went down the hallways, everyone seemed to recognize Jiyong like he was some kind of idol. He waved a couple of hellos to a lot of girls but it was nothing compared to how his new roommate seemed to know everyone by name and face while he could not remember if that girl he just greeted was called Woori or Taeyeon.
"You're popular." Seungri commented when they went up the stairs.
Jiyong laughed, "Kinda."
They soon reached the dorm room and Seungri pulled the key out. He stared at the door and stayed silent for a bit, which got him a weird look from Jiyong. When he judged that the silence sounded safe enough, he unlocked the door and carefully pushed the door.
Oh shit.
Seungri pulled the door close again. He did not know what he should say to explain that his roommate was, as always, enjoying what goes between his legs a little too much with his girlfriend.
"Something wrong?" Jiyong looked at the door, intrigued by what made his new roommate close it so fast.
The younger shook his head, there was no way to explain what was going on in there so his only idea was the quickest escape road possible: lying. "The room is a mess. I don't want you to see that."
The blond laughed heartily. "You should see what Seunghyun's room is like at times. I ain't scared, bring it." And with that, he took a step forward toward the door and was about to push it when Seungri quickly moved between him and the door which resulted in the other crashing into him rather ungracefully. "Seung--umphh!!"
At this very moment of his life, Lee Seunghyun could declare he knew what cardiac arrest was. It was what happened to him the very second Jiyong's lips and his connected during that rather unlucky incident. He kept damning himself for being the same height as the other man, that was just his karma being horrible to him for some reason he did not exactly know of but all he knew was that he would do anything to fix that bad karma.
"GET IT, SEUNGHYUNNIE."
At that, Seungri's head turned immediately. There stood his roommate - when the hell did he even open that door? - completely dressed, despite his hair being all over the place. His girlfriend was clinging to his arm as always, her usually tied up hair was down and a little mussed, she looked very content with something - Seungri couldn't tell if she was happy about what she had been doing or what she was seeing.
"I'm not 'getting' anything!" Seungri whined and helped Jiyong pick himself up since he lost balance enough so that Seungri was holding him up.
"Riiiiight." Changyeon laughed. Seungri was about to complain about his senior's behaviour until the guy cut with something else. "Oh heeey. It's my man, GD!"
"The one and only in the flesh. How it do, bro? I see your girl's still charmin' as ever." Changyeon and the blond man shared a quite special handshake. Right here, the youngest of the bunch was baffled. How could this guy -both of them actually- know so many people? Popular people connected all the dots between people or something.
"So you guys are taking the kid away?" Joonhee asked, smoothing her hair down. "We had no reasons to be worried at all then."
"I like the kid," Jiyong smiled sheepishly, ruffling Seungri's hair. "Came to pick his stuff up so he gets to settle a few things down and be sleeping with me under my roof soon."
"Do it, man. Joonhee and I had to... get out, anyways. We're outta... sugar." Changyeon cleared his throat and his girlfriend laughed at him. Seungri made a face, he knew that only meant that his seniors also emptied his box of condoms.
When the couple left, Seungri and Jiyong started on picking up a few boxes that Joonhee had packed for when the young man had to go, she had been really confident in him impressing the new roommates anyways. They carried the few boxes out the room without any trouble and went back to the car.
"Say, kid. Did you run away from home or something?" Jiyong asked when they were settled back inside the car.
Seungri looked at him with a quirked eyebrow. "No. Why are you asking?"
"Cuz all your shit fits in four boxes and you got some threads that I'd kick you out for if you were my kid." The older man simply explained as he fastened his seatbelt.
Seungri shook his head simply, "I stopped living with my folks when I was a kid to follow my heart and stuff so, nah. I never owned much, remember I'm only a delivery guy." He explained with a smile that did not quite tell everything according to his new roommate.
"Followed your heart? Where'd you go?"
"Fell in love with someone my folks didn't approve of."
"Oh. So you did run away." The blonde nodded. "I can relate to that. I've done that as a kid, too. I think I can respect you more for that, man."
They did not further the subject; there was still this light fog of discomfort settled between them because of how recently they have met. It had been a week or so since Seungri found that white phone in the bus and apparently, Jiyong did not remember him - he did look rather drunk that evening - or he pretended to avoid more awkwardness between them.
"Hey man, can I borrow your phone for a second? I lost mine and shit and I don't get time to get a new one just yet." Jiyong asked in the middle of the drive. It was weird, it was like he read through the other man's thoughts.
"Sure. It's in my pants' pocket." He shifted a bit to let him see the obviously full pocket.
The older man did not really look, he was distracted by a few flashing lights of the city that were too high in color to his tastes and he kept thinking about how he would have changed this or that one. He reached to the side, patting Seungri's thigh a few times and going up to find the said pocket.
"AH."
The car came to an abrupt stop, making them both jerk in their seats.
"What's up?" Jiyong looked over at the other, noticing how hard he was gripping at the wheel and how tensed he looked.
"W-wrong pocket." Seungri muttered.
The other looked down at his hand and found that he did not squeeze the left or right pocket. In fact, he had his hand right in between them. He removed his hand as fast as he could, apologizing a thousand times. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Geew. I didn't mean to-I'm sorry."
Seungri shook his head and threw his phone to Jiyong's lap to avoid more touching. "It's fine."
An awkward silent set camp between them. The car started to move again.
"So..." Jiyong broke the silence once again. "What do you study?"
"Uh." The driver cleared his throat. "Theater and communications. Minor in Japanese."
"Really? You could have classes with Seunghyun. He does the acting thing too."
"I really doubt that..." Seungri coughed. "How about you?"
"Fashion designing. Minoring in interior design."
"You must be..."
"Gay? It would be a good thing, huh? All the good designers are."
Another awkward silence.
"...Creative." Seungri completed. They started to laugh for no reason, the desire to get out of the car rising in the both of them. Jiyong felt like he kept making things awkward and Seungri thought that he was found out for some reason he could not explain.
Soon, they got home. They both refrained from sighing out loud when they carried the boxes inside.
"You're back from our date already?" Daesung poked his head out of the living room doorframe. "I see boxes. Come on, new kid. Let's go!" Without giving Seungri the time to even question where the guy came from, he picked up two boxes and left the others for him. He could only follow.
On their way up, they almost hit Youngbae who was coming down. The shorter man had to step rather carefully to not get hit by the boxes, it felt like limbo.
"Nice moves, Bae." Jiyong laughed and high fived his friend when he got down and the two others went up.
"You know it." The other smiled, "So. How do you like the new guy?"
"I like him a lot. He feels fresh." Jiyong thought about it for an instant. "Gotta feeling that he's gonna change something here."
Youngbae tilted his head and raised an eyebrow, he did not get it. "Is that a good thing?"
"I can't tell yet." Jiyong grinned.
"Did you tell him?"
Jiyong shrugged. "Nah. It doesn't insert itself in a conversation too well."
"Give it time." Youngbae patted him on the back, and jumped a bit when he heard a thud from upstairs. "You should come up there with me. Looks like Daesung is destroying something with an axe." He went toward the stairs again, "Come on."
Jiyong stood there, thinking for an instant.
"Come on!"
"Coming. I just need to make a phone call."
He smiled at his friend and took Seungri's phone from his pocket. He clicked the screen back to life and raised an eyebrow at what he found on the wallpaper's screen. ".... Who's that?" He shook his head, thinking it's none of his business and that he would probably ask Seungri later after making his phone call. He moved to the empty kitchen, looking left and right until he heard the greeting on the other line.
'Hey Baby. It's me..."
