Summary: The love was real, as was the heartbreak. Together they were the best, apart their souls wander endlessly searching for their other half.

Back in the time of dragons, and wizards, before the world forgot the old ways, before spells and curses faded into nonexistence, back when love had to be guarded against those who wished to steal it, lived a man whose whole life was built on the foundation of love he harbored for his best friend.

“Jen,” the taller man laughs, “Come on we can’t stop. We have to make it there by nightfall.”

The older man just looks up at his friend before running, jumping, and dropping into the chill of the water. “Jared, the horses are tired, I’m hot, but if you want to keep traveling you go for it.” The man replied before ducking his head under the water.

Sliding off his horse, with little effort, he gracefully walks to the water’s edge and sits in the damp grass. “We can’t stop.” He simply says, not looking at the other man. He continues to stare at the ground until he hears the sloshing of water and looks up as the flawless half naked man slips through the water to stand in front of him.

“Jay, you worry to much.” He tells his friend as he plucks at the shirt the man still wears. Gliding his hands down Jared’s sides he slips his fingers between the shirt and skin to touch the rigid muscles that lay underneath. He gently pulls the shirt up and off, as he continues to meet his friend’s eyes, before taking his hands and leading him into the water. “See, all you have to do is relax.” He smiles slowly before moving slightly forward, extinguishing the space between them. Jensen tenderly cups the other mans cheek before pressing their lips together. He begins to lick at the corners of Jared’s mouth until the younger man allows a moan to slip past his lips. Laughing Jensen pulls back and stares at the hazel eyes that meet his. Smiling he lays his head on his friend shoulder and absorbs the heat radiating from the man’s tan torso.

Waking up, he slowly rolls over and stares at the cloudy sky. Using his hands he wipes the tears that threaten to fall from his eyes. “Jen, I miss you.” He says to the empty air. His body moves through the routine of packing, but his heart and soul are lost. He doesn’t feel anything but anguish now, remembering how it felt when Jensen went away.

It had been two and a half years. Soon, so fucking soon, he would get to see his best friend for one night. One precious night, that couldn’t make up for the many days that have been stolen from them. Glancing up to the sky once more, he manages a smile as the hawk circles and dives, landing on his master’s arm and staring at his face. “Soon.” He whispers raising his arm and watching as the bird soars through the air.

The horse ambles over the hills and through the long grass, moving steadily but not too fast. Jared strokes his hand through the mane and sighs. He has taken great care of the horse he now rides. He had given his up so as to keep Jensen’s, because the man had loved this horse and as long as it was near, Jared felt near to Jensen. So unlike the times before, he rarely pushed the horse on, instead allowing it to keep a slow pace for the most part. He wasn’t in a hurry anymore anyways. That stopped when his heart did.

After topping the hill, Jared motions for the horse to stop. He watches as a young boy gets tossed around by the so called knights. Flowing down from atop the horse, Jared whispers for the horse to remain, as he begins walking down the hillside. As he nears, he sees one of the knights pull a knife from his boot and hold it up to the boy’s neck as the others hold the boy by his arms. “I’d back away if I was you.” Jared calls to the men as he drawls closer.

“This little thief has stolen from us.” The man responds without looking to see who spoke. “Stay out of it before the same happens to you.”

The knight freezes as he feels something sharp poke the middle of his back. “I suggest you drop the knife.” Jared calmly tells him.

The man slowly turns, preparing to fight. As soon as his eyes land on Jared he drops the knife and backs away. “Jared.” He chokes out, “You’re back.”

Jared glances over at the other two knights and watch as their arms drop and their feet move them closer to their leader. “You may want to get moving.” He simply says to them. The men turn and mount their horses, and with one more glance, rides off. Jared returns his sword to its sheath. He whistles sharply, and when he hears the hoofs of the horse he bends over, picks up a bag and hands it to the boy. “Be careful who you steal from next time.” Jared climbs back on the horse and begins to leave when he hears the boy call out to him.

“Do you need company?” the boy asks shyly.

Jared halts the horse once more and looks back over his shoulder. “No.” he replies. “I’m not a good person to be around.”

The boy smiles as he walks up to the horse. “Then I’ll just follow you.” He answers back.

Sighing, Jared reaches down and helps the boy up, sitting him behind him. “If you steal from me, I will cut off your hands.”

“Fair enough.” The boy says into his back.

They ride together for a few hours in silence before entering a dense forest and making camp. Jared watches as the boy gathers wood and begins stacking it so that a fire could be made for the night. “What’s your name boy?”

“Will.” He replies not looking up. “Why did you help me?”

Sighing, Jared turns around and begins making a lean-to for the boy. “Because Jensen would have.”

“And Jensen is?”

“was my life.” He bitterly says before walking away. “I’ll be back later. Be careful, and make sure nothing happens to the horse.”

Will watches as Jared edges away before turning to the horse. “Look’s like it’s just us buddy. Now if only you could talk.”

As night falls, Will huddles in the shelter Jared had constructed for him. He shudders when the wind picks up and carries the sounds of howling to the camp. “Stupid fucking wind…” he mumbles as he climbs out and tries to keep the fire going. “Stupid fucking Jared…” he ambles on pissed off at the man for leaving him there by himself. He whips around when he hears laughter and stares as a man stands stroking the horses head. “Who are you?” he questions, shivering from the wind, only the wind, he’s not scared. “Get away from that horse.”

Still laughing the man looks at him. “This is my horse.” He pauses to look at the young boy, “Jared find himself a new boy?” he asks sadly, as if he didn’t want to know the answer.

“New boy?” he questions looking at the man. When it dawns on him what he means he shakes his head violently, “no, no, no, he saved me today.”

“Jared saved someone? He’s not like that anymore, he’s… broken.”

“I kinda figured that out when he said the only reason he saved me was because Jensen would have.”

“Yeah,” he smiles at the boy, “Jensen would have.” The man steps closer and Will can actually see him without the shadows hiding his face. He had short golden brown hair, stood a few inches shorter than Jared, his skin was light, and when he got close enough to the fire his eyes reflected making the same color as copper burning. “Your fire’s going out.” He tells the boy and places more wood on top so the flames has something to lick at.

The boy continues to stare trying to figure out who the man could possibly be. He glances over at the horse and a thought pops into this head. “What’s the horse’s name?”

“Puck.” He answers back with a smile.

The boy’s eyes open wide as he points at the man, “You’re Jensen?” Instead of getting an answer the man just smirks. “Why aren’t you with Jared?”

“Cause I can’t be.” The man replies solemnly as he sits by the fire, picks up a stick and begins poking at the burning wood.

“But why?” the boy questions refusing to accept that as an answer.

“Do you need to know everything?”

“Sometimes, yes. Now why?”

Jensen stares at him before looking away and whispering, “Because I fucked up.”
