I understand, I am the darkest, heaviest woman on my mother's side. I can remember my very fair skinned grandmother telling me to "keep out of the sun, you're getting so black", people talking about how I didn't have my mother's "good hair", and how I have "such a pretty face" and looking down at the rest of me in pity.

As a black woman, I think we forget sometimes that these stereotypes cross all cultures. I am so glad that I learned to love me despite what society, the media, and even my own grandma had to say about it. When I figured out how to finally love me--- I not only felt beautiful on the inside, there was no doubt in my mind that I was on the outside too.

Good hair means curls and waves
Bad hair means you look like a slave
At the turn of the century
Its time for us to redefine who we be
You can shave it off
Like a South African beauty
Or get in on lock
Like Bob Marley
You can rock it straight
Like Oprah Winfrey
If its not what's on your head
Its what's underneath
