Fishie! congrats on your addition to the family. I've only ever killed fish; they didn't survive the first tank cleaning. I will stick to cats from now on.
Oh my - how did you clean the tanks? o.O You're not supposed to use detergent or bleach. And you shouldn't do 100% water changes unless you have a tiny bowl, in which case you shouldn't be keeping a fish there at all.
I had a pretty good sized tank with smaller fish. I only used tap water and the scrubbing pads. Unfortunately what I did was not let the water condition long enough, and it was either still too full of chlorine or too cold when I tumped them back in. Yeah, I murdered them *cries* I admit it!
The very first time we kept goldfish, we murdered them through neglect and abuse. And possibly overfeeding. My dad had gotten my brother two fancy goldfish for his birthday - I believe he was about 10? And we all were very enthusiastic about them.
The goldfish bowl was a bowl. I believe it probably didn't even hold 2 gallons of water. It didn't have a filter, it was half filled with stone-gravel, it merely had an air-stone. Two rather fat fancy goldfish, and whatever little fishies my father found - tiny tetras, a sucker fish...

We overfed them, and never changed the water.
It's no wonder they died.
