We got the responses for Outdoor Ed counselor applications today and it's crap. Even if I am waaaaay more qualified for the position than a senior girl, the senior gets the spot over me, which is ageism isn't it???? So i wrote a letter to one of the organizers...........
Dear Mr. Reale,
This is Kelsey Howard, a former student of yours. I'm writing you concerning my desire to serve as a counselor in this spring's Outdoor Ed program. The letter I received states that I have been placed on a waiting list, and I am not sure what that means. Does this mean that I could possibly go to Outdoor Ed but only if a senior withdraws or is unable to attend? And if that is the case when would I find out if I would be a counselor? And correct me if I am wrong, but it seems as if I meet, if not, exceed every requirement that was listed on the application, not to mention, I am certified in first aid and CPR, so Incas of any mishaps or emergencies, I would be well prepared. Also, I have often been recognized for my leadership abilities, which I am sure you are aware. Well, I guess what I am getting at is that I find it hard to believe that all of the senior girls who applied are better prepared than I am for this position. The application materials led everyone to believe that the counselors would be chosen based on the criteria set forth, not whether they were juniors or seniors. And, once again, correct me if I am wrong, but I feel that I am as qualified as one can get. Would it not be a wise decision to have returning and experienced counselors for the years to come, with a balanced number of juniors and seniors, so that not everyone was starting out green. That way the experienced counselors would be able to help the first timers. I would appreciate a response to clarify my confusion and hopefully a cure for my current disappointment. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Kelsey Howard
