To add injury to... um... something

Jul 28, 2006 22:37

In my utmost brilliance today, I managed to break my toe. Fortunately I'm quarantined from doing anything this weekend anyway so my retarded gimpiness will not cause anyone else any inconvenience, but it does leave me feeling pretty stupid.

I did it walking down the stairs.

Wow.

Go me.

Ow. I don't usually injure myself (I get injured sometimes, but that's usually with help) so I feel double-special doing it so often now.

Protect your toes between now and London -- great place to walk around! :)

I assume that they told you that you will break bones more easily. Chemo has a wonderful way of depleting your BMP (Bone Metabolic Proteins for those not married to a bone tissue engineer :) ) Please be careful!!

Interesting. I wasn't acutally aware of that, though for platelet and white blood cell reasons (and now RBC reasons), I'm off any sort of strenuous or impact-causing activity. Exept, apparently, walking down stairs.

I hadn't ever seen that as a side effect of my chemo -- only as an advance done for my cancer (a state I hadn't gotten to yet).

Good to know!

Stupid glass toes.

People keep trying to tell me that the collarbone is the most broken bone in the body, but I think they are full of crap.

I broke my baby toe once. I only noticed because it was too swollen to fit in any close toed shoes.

Feel better!

Collarbone? I find that really hard to believe. People break toes and fingers all the time (often never seeking medical assistance -- possibly skewing stats). The collarbone is a pretty tough one to break, I'd think.

Thanks :) I just think of myself as "swell" now.

I still don't quite believe this because I know more people who've broken arms, toes, fingers, etc. and only a couple who broke the clavicle. But I've heard this several times and it's in at least one textbook that I have on hand (Moore and Agur's Essential Clinical Anatomy) that the clavicle is commonly fractured from traume associated with a fall onto an outstretched hand or direct trauma to the shoulder. I have heard that it's the most common fracture, but I can't cite a source for that.

I'll ask the (former surgeon) anatomy professors next time I see them.

Wierd, eh?

Clearly the answer is that you need to sit around and play more video games.

Hmm. Excellent course of treatment, Dr. Lee. I'll get right on it! ^_^

Aww! I used to break my pinky toe pretty regularly for about a 2 year span, running it in to corners when I moved around the house barefoot too fast... I know how it hurts both the meats and the ego!

Heh. That may be part of why I always wear shoes... And I like that phrase:
I know how it hurts both the meats and the ego!

:D
