Heh. Yeah, I've been asking just that about that slogan for months now. My more sardonic answer is something about pre-Civil War... but I agree the 1950s is probably more what the originators of that slogan are referencing.

But as much fun as reenacting history can, I don't want to live in it.

It's a slogan that resonates with the core demographic of the traditional Republican party voters, pissed-off southern white males who think everyone else is to blame for their problems.

It's not a very big demographic, but they are very vocal and have influence out of all proportion.
