Personality: Maya is a highly intelligent and strong-minded woman. Unfortunately, she is not exactly very polite. She is brash, quick to anger in cases, speaks her mind and generally does not really care what others think of her - it is more important to her that the image she has of herself stays intact. Sure, that might not make all that much sense to others, but again, that is not her concern.
Maya has quite a lot of trouble with naive idealism and has a tendency to argue against that, especially if she likes the person who has these idealistic ideals - it is her belief that such ideals are far too easy to disappoint when the world itself does not live up to them which, in her opinion, the world usually does not.
She has quite a problem in general to voice when she really likes another person, and tends to hide that behind more brashness.
Her other negative trait is that she is a bit too greedy for her own good, especially when it comes to gems (or other beautiful things), and she also likes to have attention occasionally.
Background:
Maya was born on the planet Filgaia as the heir of the rich Schroedinger family. She was a bookworm, and greatly enjoyed reading fantasy stories, for example about strong witches defeating evil villains, or about the exploits of Calamity Jane, a quite famous gun-toting drifter/adventurer. Usually, one would expect a woman of her social class to grow out of that, and instead turn to the finer arts of culture, conversation, and the like.
The exact opposite happened in the case of Maya. She wanted adventure, to be one who discovered things with her own strength, like her idols from the books, instead of living a boring life somewhere, sheltered from the real world.
And that was exactly what she became - quite literally. She had, after all, a very unusual power. This power allowed her to transform into a combination of herself and these fictional characters just by her strength of will, triggered by touching one of her books. In fact, Maya hardly appears in her real form to begin with, which was really mousy and geeky; instead she can usually be seen as a …gun-toting tall drifter, much like Calamity Jane in her stories. That form is a combination of herself with the fictional Calamity Jane. This is not because she is afraid of her real self but because it simply is more practical. Besides, she looks better in the mirror that way.
She was one of the few people who could synchronise with weapons called Arms - quite powerful fire arms crafted from the bones of dragons. She owns a whole load of them, ranging from small pistols over shotguns and a bazooka to an oversized gatling-gun., which she can draw out of thin air, pretty much.
Aided by her brother Alfred, a talking cat named Shady and their servant Todd (notorious both for his Afro that sadly easily caught fire, and also his Swordfighting skills) she became one of the best drifters of Filgaia, looting ruins for their treasure, investigating places no human had entered for centuries, and defeating creatures that threatened villages. In fact, she even had a hand in defeating one of the biggest menaces Filgaia ever faced, by synchronising with a human-sized dragon horn and impaling said menace onto it.
Her dream is still discovering beautiful gems and other beautiful jewellery, but since most secrets of Filgaia are known to her by now, she has decided to look in other places…especially since she knew that Filgaia’s most beautiful gem got destroyed in the first place. In this AU, however, she did not declare Filgaia to be said jewel. Instead…
There were rumours of other worlds one could reach by portals, and thus Maya has decided to visit these. Of course, she would have to be careful, and thus she decided to go alone for now, without revealing who she was openly - not that anyone who wasn’t coming from Filgaia would recognize her. She’d go as a student, because she figured that it would allow her to easily gather the information she sought. As an additional bonus, leaving Filgaia meant that she wouldn’t have to run into Virginia that often - another drifter that Maya had declared to be her rival, so other people wouldn’t notice that Maya liked the naïve Virginia. Reputation and all, Maya wanted to be tough and such, after all.
Her biggest regret was leaving her family (which included Todd by default) behind for now.
