I finally succeeded in upgrading my flight to California with frequent flyer miles. The first time I called, they told me that seats were available, so they deducted the miles from my account, and then only after doing that did they tell me that they were only giving out the first-class seats to people paying the first-class fare. Oops. Next time I called, he misquoted me an amount that was 50% higher in miles than it actually cost, and when I called him on it, he blamed it on a computer error, saying that it's been slow lately. And then he told me that no seats were available for anyone, first-class-fare-paying or otherwise... so I gave up. Then this morning I went to check in for my flight and they tried to sell me an upgrade for cash. This gave me the idea that perhaps they weren't really out of first-class seats, so I called back and tried to get an upgrade. Finally, the day before the flight, it worked. I think. I guess I'll wait until I'm actually in the plane, eating distinguished crackers, before I decide whether it really worked or not.

What a scam. I can't understand how people actually have credit cards that give them frequent flyer miles, when they could just as easily get cash. And many of those people pay annual fees for those cards! Wow.
