my pop has no foundation

I was intrigued by exploring the foundation of my musical tastes and I realized that I don't really have a meaningful foundation. I was an MTV child. My dad listened to soul. I would yell at my mom to turn down the Led Zeppelin. I'll start at the beginning then:

Duran Duran - is the first band I remember liking. loving. they could do no wrong. my sister and i had a copy of the Seven and the Ragged Tiger and Arena. Rio is a much better album, but I was three years old when it came out, so that's my excuse. "The Chauffeur" is like the best song ever.

Michael Jackson and Madonna - And here is where my un-foundation begins. Not much substance, but a nice presentation, I suppose that's what it's all about. I was enamoured and in love with both of them. Thriller is still the best video of all time. And somehow, I've managed to love Madonna all these years, but secretly "Lucky Star" is the best.

Skateway - this was the local rollerskating rink. I remember songs especially well suited to this activity. There's a certain type of music I call "Skateway Music." The best example of this genre would be "When I Hear Music" by Debbie Deb.

When I was in elementary school I started dancing and twirling flags. This is an entirely different musical realm than most inhabit. It is where I learned and experienced the elements of music. I was exposed to not only current pop, but also hip hop, rap, musicals, soundtracks/score, classical and anything else one could dance to. I spent seven years or so years of my life hanging out at competitions. I heard everything and loved most of it.

Prince - I listened to the entire Purple Rain album nearly every night for a year. That does something to you. Really.

Elastica - I heard them and something woke up inside of me. Completely unoriginal, but so much energy and sex appeal. My favorite band of all time, no doubt about it. I don't expect anyone else to get it. You had to be there.

Belly - Tanya Donelly's voice is just so....I don't even know. "King" is my favorite album.

The Breeders - I was a bit too young to know of the Pixies, but I remember hearing Cannonball and just was like, whoa. My sis had purchased Last Splash and hated it. I listened and thus began my love affair with Kim Deal (who is only second to Justine Frischmann)

Luscious Jackson - another band that somehow clicked with me. It's hard for me to know how popular they really were since I was obsessed for such a long time.

Blondie/Wire/David Bowie - Can't stop listening.

As far as my musical tastes at the moment. I seem to be looking back to the past more than I have previously. I'm not thrilled with the current state of popular pop music. I find myself listenling to classic rock when I turn on the radio.

So there it is. My uneducated and ignorant basis for my relationship to music.
