It's Tanabata. She's wearing the new yukata she bought just for the matsuri, he's wearing nicer casual clothes than normal. They're both twenty-one.
And he has just told her his biggest secret: that he is Vongola Decimo.
His hands are shoved deep into the pockets of his pants and his chin is tucked close to his chest as if he has just be scolded.
Her gaze is fastened on the ground in front of her feet, her mouth hanging open as she searches for what to say.
Tsuna doesn't entirely understand why he's come clean to Haru now after all these years. Maybe it's because he considers her not just someone to protect, but someone that's a part of his growing famiglia. Maybe it's because she's matured quite a bit since she was fifteen (but haven't they all? No thanks to him) and he trusts her with the truth. Maybe it's because he likes the way she takes care of his Guardians and treats them all with respect and geniality; and he's noticed they treat her the same way.
Haru wasn't entirely surprised by his confession. She's known for years that the mafia game wasn't a game at all, and also that it wasn't her place to ask for the truth. Tsuna would tell her when the time was right. So she had devoted herself to doing all that she could to help him and the other boys. If it meant taking care of Lambo and I-Pin, she'd gladly baby-sit them. If it meant learning all she could about the Italian underworld, she'd stay up all night reading history books. She had been studying Italian in secret since she was eighteen so that when Tsuna left with the others to Italy she could go with them.
He thinks maybe he told her because she's incredibly loyal, and it's not fair to force her to make an uniformed decision.
She thinks maybe he told her because he realizes she's already made her decision, and he cares enough for her to let her change her mind before this goes any further.
“Ha... Haru...?” he asks hesitantly, peeking at her through his eyelashes.
She takes a deep breath and smiles in earnest, lifting her head. The fireworks explode in the sky and reflect in their eyes as they watch each other. “That doesn't change anything.”
It's not what he expects. “Huh?” He raises a hand to scratch the back of his head.
Her smile turns soft and she reaches for his hand, holding it firmly between her palms. “Thank you for sharing the truth with me, Tsuna-san.” Her eyes are sharper and more adult than he's ever seen, but they're still bright and lively. “I'm honored that you're letting me share the burden of your position.”
She giggles and her eyes are suddenly how they were back when he first saved her from drowning in the river. “And Haru will be Tsuna-san's wife no matter what!”
“Uh, ah... that's not... Haru-”
But she's laughing now, tugging him along the path so that they can join up with their friends. Their Family.
His heart is lighter. Nothing has changed. She's still Haru.
Her heart is lighter. Nothing has changed. He's still Tsuna.
