RIP Steve Lacy. He passed away from liver cancer in Boston last week, at the age of 69. As much as I didn't really enjoy that open workshop I went to of his, I'm glad I got to see him now. I'm really pissed that I didn't go to that talk he gave -- apparently that was the best thing he did. *sigh* It really is coming to the end of an era... so many of these guys are leaving us. Elvin, now Steve Lacy... he taught at NEC and I was hoping that maybe I could study under him at some point. The attention and respect he commanded even when he was really frail looking as he was when gave the workshop was just astounding.
Went out with Lauryn after the show to Kunta Lounge on St. Denis where Andy Williams & Scott C were spinning Afro-funk and other assorted goodies. It's a really chill place though on the expensive side (Lauryn got this green concoction called a grasshopper for $7), great ambience, cool chairs, conga drums randomly placed around the club, and a neat little outdoor terrasse. Scott remembered who I was, which was cool. I certainly didn't expect that.
Oof. I should be sleeping.
